Can you tell us something about the path that brought you to become a writer?
When I was young I had a very “active imagination,” as my mother said, and she gave me journals to write down all my wild stories and dreams. We read fiction every night, and those worlds were always more compelling than my own. My favorite game was pretend. I’ve been writing ever since I was eight, but I never thought I could make a living as a writer. After school I worked in finance and then decided to go back to get my Master of Fine Arts in writing. There I became immersed in a community of writers and learned what it took to get published. I placed a few short stories and essays in literary magazines, but feel most at home in the novel form. I found the publisher for my first novel, The Dragon Keeper, in an online call for submissions. For my second novel, I queried agents until I got an offer and am now represented by The Gernert Company in New York. It’s only now that I’m finishing my third book that I’ve quit my job in finance, leaving the numbers behind as I dive into my pretend worlds.
Può parlarci del percorso che l’ha portata a diventare una scrittrice?
Quando ero piccola avevo una grande “immaginazione attiva” come la chiamava mia madre, così mi regalò un diario sul quale scrivere tutte le mie folli storie e i miei sogni. Ogni sera leggevamo una storia e per me quelle parole erano quasi più convincenti della realtà, infatti il mio gioco preferito era fingere (recitare). Scrivo dall’eà di otto anni ma non avrei mai pensato che nella vita avrei fatto la scrittrice. Dopo la scuola ho lavorato nella finanza, ma poi ho deciso di continuare gli studi e prendere il Diploma di Belle Arti in scrittura. Mi sono ritrovata immersa in una comunità di scrittori dove ho imparato tutto ciò che serviva per essere pubblicati. Alcune mie brevi storie e saggi sono stati pubblicati in riviste letterarie ma il genere che più mi si adatta è il romanzo. Ho trovato l’editore per il primo libro “La Custode del drago” attraverso una presentazione avvenuta con una chiamata online. Per il secondo invece, ho iniziato a cercare un agente finchè non ho ricevuto un’offerta ed oggi sono rappresentata dalla Gernert Company di New York. Soltanto adesso che ho finito il mio terzo romanzo ho lasciato il lavoro nella finanza buttandomi alle spalle i numeri per dedicarmi completamente ai miei mondi immaginari.
Your last novel “Everything you want to be” tells the story of a young girl, but with a very strong and special personality. Would you tell us how did you find the inspiration for this character?
When I first began writing Hattie, the girl whose murder shakes up her small farming community, I initially thought of her as a Laura Palmer figure (from Twin Peaks) a girl who seems perfect on the surface but has a completely different identity underneath the facade. Hattie is also a natural actress, a people pleaser who is, as the title suggests, all things to all people, but she doesn’t take on these roles altruistically; she does it because she can get away with it, because she’s a bit of a narcissist. As many teenagers do, she’s trying to figure out her identity at a time when the boundaries of her world are rapidly changing and, in this quest, makes many bad choices with ultimately tragic consequences.
Il suo nuovo libro “L’ultima sera di Hattie Hoffman” racconta la storia di una ragazza molto giovane, ma con un carattere molto forte e particolare. Ci può parlare di come ha trovato l’ispirazione per questo suo personaggio?
Quando ho iniziato a scrivere di Hattie, il cui omicidio ha sconvolto la piccola comunità agricola in cui viveva, pensavo a lei come ad una Laura Palmer (da Twin Peaks), una ragazza che in apparenza sembra perfetta ma che poi dietro la facciata è completamente diversa. Hattie è un’attrice nata, una che piace alla gente perchè ha tante personalità, come suggerisce il titolo può essere chiunque tu voglia che sia, ma non lo fa per altruismo; per lei è un via di fuga ed è anche un pò narcisista. Come molte altre teenagers, sta cercando di definire la sua personalità in un momento in cui i confini del suo mondo stanno rapidamente cambiando, e ciò la porta a compiere delle scelte sbagliate, che avranno poi, conseguenze tragiche.
The book is narrated by three differents point of view, and the narrators too, are very differents from each other for their stories and exepriences: a middle aged policeman, a young teacher and a thirteen year old girl who has still to find herself. Was it difficult to write by changing perspective everytime?
I had to establish a hook into each character. I read through all my old school journals in order to get into Hattie’s head. The new teacher in town, Peter, and I are both vegetarian runners so that was my connection with him. For Del, the aging sheriff who is trying to solve Hattie’s murder, I channeled the voice of my maternal grandfather. Once I established each of these connections, it was fairly easy to jump between points of view for different chapters.
Il libro viene narrato da tre diversi punti di vista. I tre narratori sono completamente diversi tra di loro, con storie ed emozioni differenti: un poliziotto di mezza età, un giovane professore e una ragazzina tredicenne che deve ancora scoprire sè stessa. E’ stato difficile scrivere cambiando ogni volta prospetiva?
Ho dovuto stabilire dei legami con ogni personaggio. Per entrare nella testa di Hattie, ho riletto tutte le mie riviste scolastiche. Il nuovo professore, Peter, come me è un corridore vegetariano e questo è stato il nostro punto comune. A Dal, lo sceriffo che indaga sull’omicidio di Hattie, invece ho dato la voce del mio nonno materno. Una volta stabilite tutte queste connessioni, è stato piuttosto semplice spostarmi tra i diversi punti di vista attraverso i vari capitoli.
In this novel there are a lot of references to Jane Eyre. What about the choice of this classic work of literature?
Jane Eyre viene presentata all’inizio del libro perchè è in perfetta contrapposizione con il Macbeth, spettacolo in cui Hattie recita la sera della sua scomparsa. Mentre in Macbeth c’è uno studio psicologico molto approfondito sulla resa al desiderio e alla passione, Jane Eyre mostra il contrario: la ricompensa per l’innocenza e la moralità. Offre uno sfondo tematico ideale per l’inizo dell’avventura di Hattie e per il tipo di comunità in cui vive. Nel Minnesita rurale c’è una forte base cristiana, ma anche un grande spirito di indipendenza e stoicismo, caratteristiche che Jane Eyre impersonifica molto bene.
Nel racconto ci sono molti riferimenti a Jane Eyre. Come mai il richiamo a questo classico?
Jane Eyre is featured at the beginning of the book and offers a counterpoint to Macbeth, which is the play Hattie stars in on the night of her death. While Macbeth is a very dark psychological study about succumbing to corruption and desire, Jane Eyre showcases the opposite: the rewards of innocence and morality. Jane Eyre made an excellent thematic backdrop for the beginning of Hattie’s journey and the type of community where she lives. There’s a strong Christian base in rural Minnesota as well as a spirit of independence and stoicism that Jane exhibits very well.
What kind of reader are you? Which are the features you are looking for in a romance?
I love books that can deliver thrilling narrative, teach me something I didn’t know, while also making me care deeply about the characters. My favorite Goodreads shelf is called “Thrills and Heart.” As far as romance, I’m a romantic by nature. All my books are a love story in some fashion, but not in the conventional sense. The Dragon Keeper is a love story about a zookeeper and the Komodo dragon in her care. Everything You Want Me To Be is, for me, an ode to the people and landscape of Southern Minnesota where all my grandparents farmed. Of course there’s always sex and intrigue and murder, but love is the current that runs beneath everything, making all the thrilling elements matter. You can’t have heart stopping moments unless your heart is caught and jumping
Che tipo di lettrice è? Quali sono le caratteristiche che ricera in un romanzo?
Mi piacciono i libri con una narrazione avvincente, che possano insegnarmi qualcosa che non so e che mi facciano affezionare ai personaggi. La mia sezione preferita su Goodread si chiama “Thrills and Heart”. Per quel che riguarda il romanticismo, io sono romantica di natura. In un certo senso tutti i miei libri sono storie d’amore anche se non in modo convenzionale. La Custode del drago è una storia d’amore tra il drago Komodo e la guardiana che lo cura. L’ultima sera di Hattie Hoffman, per me è un omaggio alle persone e ai territori del Minnesota del sud, terra dei miei nonni. Certamente c’è sempre sesso, intrigo e morte, ma l’amore è il filo costante che corre tra tutti i vari elementi e che li rende così emozionanti. Non puoi stare tranquillo se il tuo cuore continua a sobbalzare.
Do you know nordic thriller?
By Nordic thriller, do you mean the Stieg Larsson style books and the swelling of that genre? I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to read Nordic thrillers, although I just read an excellent dissection of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by fellow fiction writer Benjamin Percy in his craft book, Thrill Me. I would highly recommend it to any aspiring thriller writers

Per Thriller nordico si intende lo stile dei libri di Stieg Larsson e tutto quel filone letterario? Non ho avuto molte opportunità di leggerli, sebbene abbia appena terminato la lettura di un eccellente approfondimento su Uomini che odiano le donne, nel libro di un mio collega scrittore Benjamin Percy, “Thrill me”. Lo raccomanderei sinceramente ad ogni aspirante scrittore di thriller.
