Com’è nata l’idea per questo thriller? Cosa l’ha ispirata?
Guardando un programma che va in onda qui negli Stati Uniti, che si chiama Dateline, in cui si raccontava la storia vera di un crimine, molto simile a quello che avevo in mente, e che mi ha incuriosito molto. Inoltre mi interessavano i legami familiari che si creano con il matrimonio. La sposa e lo sposo certamente si amano, ma a volte i genitori mettono in dubbi le scelte dei figli riguardo ai loro compagni di vita. Era questo aspetto che volevo esplorare, per mostrare che esiste sempre un modo per superare le nostre differenze.
How was born the idea for your thriller “The truth we bury”? What did you inspire?
A television program here, in the US called Dateline featured a story, a true crime, that was similar, and it intrigued me. Also, I was interested in how families come together through marriage. The bride and groom, of course, love each other, but sometimes parents doubt their children’s choices of a life mate. I wanted to explore that, and to show there’s always a way for us to overcome our differences.
Nel libro vi è una forte componente madre-figlio e una disgregazione delle famiglie. Cosa ci può dire a riguardo?
Io ho due figli e ricordo di aver pensato, e sentito dire, che i figli maschi si allontanano dalla madre, quando iniziano a crescere e a farsi uomini. Al contrario, spesso si diceva che fosse più probabile che una figlia femmina rimanesse vicino alla famiglia, ma i maschi no, se ne sarebbero separati. Da madre, sono stata determinata a non farlo accadere, così come Lily, nonostante le circostanze fossero contro di lei. Ma sono felice di sapere che il suo amore per AJ sia arrivato al lettore.
In your book there is a strong mother-son component and a deep family breakdown. What can you tell us about that?
I have two sons, and I can remember thinking and also hearing that mothers often lose touch with their sons as they grow up and become men. I often heard a daughter was more likely to stay close to her family, but the sons would grow apart. I was determined not to let that happen as a mother myself, and so was Lily, despite how many things in her life worked against her. I’m so glad her love for AJ shines through.
Un altro argomento importante nella storia è il disturbo da stress post traumatico, ha fatto degli studi, delle ricerche per approfondire l’argomento? Come procede più generalmente nella costruzione delle sue storie?
Ho fatto molte ricerche, ed ho scoperto che non capita solo a coloro che subiscono un trauma dopo la guerra. Può succedere a chiunque rimanga vittima di un crimine, o di qualcosa terribilmente spaventoso o estremamente doloroso. Mi piace scrivere romanzi che affrontano varie problematiche, quelle storie che offrono spunti di riflessione, ecco perché tendo a cercare in profondità la radice del problema e a scoprire come si evolve. E cerco di riportare i fatti in modo equilibrato. Oltre al disturbo da stress post traumatico, nei miei scritti ho trattato, e fatto ricerche, anche sulle dipendenze, sui traumi cranici e una serie di crimini. Il 15 maggio 2018, negli Stati Uniti uscirà il mio nuovo libro, che si chiama What lies below, con una trama incentrata sul possibile rapimento di un bambino da parte dei genitori. Voglio mostrare come all’interno di una famiglia, è sempre possibile ritrovarsi l’un l’altro anche dopo un evento così terribile. Spero sempre di riuscire a far emergere la possibilità della compassione e del perdono.
Another important topic faced in your book is the post traumatic stress disorder, did you study about this matter and research to get through the content? Usually, how do you proceed in creating you stories?
I did do a lot of research, and found that it isn’t limited to those who endure the trauma of war. It can happen to anyone who is a victim of a crime or anything that is horribly frightening or extremely painful. I love writing issue-oriented fiction, the sort of story that will inspire a discussion, so I do tend to research thoroughly whatever the issue revolves around. I strive to present the facts in a balanced manner. In addition to PTSD, I’ve researched and written about addiction, head injuries, and a variety of crimes. A book I have written, titled WHAT LIES BELOW, coming out in the US May 15, 2018, features a plot centered on the possibly parental kidnapping of a young child. I want to show that within families, we can find each other again even after something horrible happens. I’m always in hope of illuminating the possibility for compassion and forgiveness.
Cosa consiglia agli aspiranti scrittori che vogliono avvicinarsi al mondo dell’editoria?
Per mia esperienza ci sono due cose necessarie, disciplina e perseveranza. Scrivere regolarmente, e preferibilmente, ogni giorno, alla stessa ora, e per lo stesso tempo. Questo aiuterà a stimolare l’ispirazione. Una volta che avrete terminato il lavoro, e sarà pronto per essere presentato, fate una lista di tutti gli agenti ed editori più appetibili, e iniziate ad inviare il vostro manoscritto. Non importa quanti rifiuti riceverete, andate avanti e presentatelo il più possibile. L’ultimo consiglio che voglio darvi, è che sarebbe opportuno leggere, o averlo già fatto, almeno cento libri del genere al quale appartiene il vostro romanzo. Se non potete leggerne così tanti, probabilmente dovreste riconsiderare il tipo di libro che volete scrivere.
What do you recommend to wannabe writers that want to get closer to publishing world?
The two things I have found are necessary are discipline and persistence. Write regularly, preferably at the same time every day for the same period of time every day. It will train your muse to show up. Once you have a completed work, ready for submission, make a list of your most desirable agents and/or publishers and begin to submit to them. Then no matter the number of rejections, keep at it. Keep writing and submitting. The last piece of advice I would offer is that you should be willing, or you should have already read, 100 books in the genre in which you aspire to be published. If you can’t read that many, then it’s possible you need to rethink the type of book you want to write.
Come mai ha scelto di dedicarsi al genere thriller e non ad altri generi narrativi?
L’ho sempre vissuta come una scelta fatta dalla mia ispirazione e dall’intuito. Quando molti anni fa mi sono seduta per la prima volta per scrivere un romanzo, avrei voluto che fosse un romanzo storico. Ma la mia testa aveva altri progetti, e così ben presto mi sono ritrovata a scrivere una storia di suspance, contemporanea, che ruotava attorno alle famiglie e al crimine. Io penso che in parte sia dovuto alle esperienze fatte quando vivevo con mio marito, che faceva la guardia in un’area che ospitava una struttura carceraria per primi reati, dove ho potuto conoscere i detenuti e le famiglie. L’obiettivo della struttura e degli operatori era cercare di riabilitare questi ragazzi e far cambiare loro direzione. Era un lavoro gratificante e quasi sempre di successo. Pochissimi di quei giovani uomini facevano ritorno in prigione dopo essere stati rilasciati.
Why did you choose to focus on thriller genre and not to others kinds of narrative?
This has always felt to me like a choice my muse or my intuition made. When I first sat down to write a novel many years ago, I thought I would write historical fiction. But my brain had other ideas and soon I was writing contemporary suspense that revolved around families and crime. I think it’s in part due to experiences I had while living with my husband who was a warden on the grounds of a first offender prison facility where I came to know the inmates and their families. It was the purpose of the facility and its employees to try and rehabilitate these boys and change the direction of their lives. It was gratifying work, and almost always successful. Very few of the young men ever reappeared in the prison system once they were released.

E’ così difficile sceglierne uno. Ho amato la lettura sin da bambina. Uno dei miei libri preferiti, che rileggo quasi tutti gli anni, è Il giardino segreto. Mi piacciono molto i libri di Anita Shreve, soprattutto La moglie del pilota, che mi ha influenzato quando ho iniziato a scrivere di famiglie e di come, all’interno delle stesse, le azioni criminali di un membro, influiscano anche sugli altri. Di recente mi sono piaciuti molto Un frammento di mondo di Christina Baker Kline, Le nostre anime di notte di Kent Haruf e This Dark Road To Mercy di Wiley Cash.
As a reader, would you like to suggest us your favourite book?
It is so hard to choose. I have loved to read since I was a child. One of my very favorite books is one I still reread almost every year and that is The Secret Garden. I also love Anita Shreve’s books, most especially The Pilot’s Wife, which influenced me when it came to writing about families and how one family member’s crime can effect the others. Recently I have loved Christina Baker Kline’s A Piece of the World, Kent Haruf’s Our Soul’s At Night, and Wiley Cash’s This Dark Road To Mercy.
Conosce il thriller nordico? C’è un autore che segue in particolar modo?
Per quanto riguarda i thriller nordici… ho letto molti libri di Tana French con grande coinvolgimento. Ho letto uomini che odiano le donne e mi ha colpito la storia e la scrittura così vivida. Seguo tantissimo autori, Anita Shreve è una, poi Jessica Strawser, Rosamund Lupton, Elizabeth Strout, Wiley Cash, John Hart e Diane Chamberlain per dirne alcuni.
Do you know nordic thriller? Is there an Author you particularly follow?
For Nordic thrillers … I have read several of Tana French’s novels and been immersed. I also read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and was in awe over the story, how vividly written it was. I do follow several authors, Anita Shreve is one, also Jessica Strawser, Rosamund Lupton, Elizabeth Strout, Wiley Cash, John Hart and Diane Chamberlain to name a few.
