A tu per tu incontra oggi Gilly MacMillan, autrice di bestsellers come 9 giorni e La ragazza perfetta. Per Thrillernord abbiamo recensito Era il mio migliore amico e l’autrice ha risposto ad alcune interessanti domande.
Lei è cresciuta negli Stati Uniti ma ha scelto di vivere a Bristol. Cosa l’ha portata a preferire il Vecchio Mondo al Nuovo?
Ho vissuto negli Stati Uniti da adolescente, ma ho trascorso la mia infanzia nel Regno Unito, che quindi è sempre stata la mia vera casa ed è il posto in cui vive la mia famiglia. Ho scelto Bristol perchè si trova in una posizione che adoro, grazie alle bellissime campagne, e poi è una città culturale e vivace, il luogo ideale per la famiglia. Nonostante ciò, credo di aver lasciato un pò del mio cuore negli Usa, è probabile che ami sia il Vecchio che il Nuovo Mondo.
You grew up in the USA, but chose to live in Bristol. Why did you prefer the Old World to the New one?
I lived in the USA when I was a teenager, but spent my childhood in the UK so it has always been my true home and where my family are. I chose to live in Bristol because it’s situated in an area of the UK that I love because of the beautiful countryside and it’s a buzzy, cultural city: a great place to raise my family. Having said that, I believe I did leave a little bit of my heart in the USA. It’s probably true to say that I love both the Old World and the New one.
Il libro tocca molteplici tematiche sociali, prima fra tutte l’integrazione fra culture diverse e i pregiudizi che la ostacolano. In questo particolare momento politico come descriverebbe il clima che circonda noi e i nostri figli?
Viviamo in un clima politico molto complicato (nel Regno unito ovvimente), in cui i problemi legati al razzismo e all’ingrazione sono spesso utilizzati come armi, nelle quotidiane battaglie tra i vari partiti. Queste tematiche sono invece molto complesse, ma vengono trattate con grande superficialità e a grandi lineee sia dalla politica che dai media, e credo sia un problema perché potrebbero fomentare paura, dove non dovrebbe esserci, ed oscurare le storie personale degli individui coinvolti, generando anche una mancanza di empatia. Il lavoro dello scrittore è quello di indagare nella mente e nelle esperienze dei suoi personaggi, per questo ho colto l’occasione di raccontare, mel mio libro, la storia personale di due famiglie che vivono entrambe le condizioni nella città di Bristol. Spero di essere
riuscita ad evitare di scadere nella generalizzazione, creando dei personaggi ben caratterizzati, con le loro personali sfumature, con i quali i lettori possano relazionarsi.
Your novel deals about various social issues, first of all the interplay between ifferent cultures and the prejudices that are hindering it. In this particular political moment, how would you describe the climate that surrounds us and our children?
We live in a very challenging political climate (in the UK, certainly) where issues of race and immigration are often used as tools in the day-to-day battle between political parties. Those complex and human issues are generally being treated with very broad strokes by politicians and in the media and I believe that’s a problem because it can both incite fear where fear is not necesssary, and obscure individual, human stories. This can lead to a lack of empathy. It is the writer’s job to dig into the minds and experiences of our fictional characters and I took the opportunity in this novel to tell the very personal stories of two families affected by these issues in the city of Bristol. I hope I have avoided those broad strokes in my story by creating nuanced characters who readers can relate to and invest in.
La violenza sulle donne è un altro punto principale della narrazione. Secondo lei le nuove generazioni saranno più preparate e tutelate ad affrontare questa emergenza?
Lo spero vivamente! Il dibattito attuale sulla condizione della donna è molto presente ed inevitabile, e spero che questo implichi un’educazione migliore per le nuove generazioni, su come rapportarsi alle donne con rispetto, e che le ragazze crescano con la sicurezza di venire ascoltate e prese sul serio se vorranno parlare di violenza e abusi.
Violence against women is another important benchmark in your narrative. According to you, new generations will be better equipped and safeguarded to deal with this emergency?
I sincerely hope so! The current media debate about the treatment of women is loud and unavoidable and I can only hope this means new generations will be better educated about how to treat women with respect, and that girls will grow up feeling confident they will be listened to and taken seriously if they speak up about violence and abuse.
Focalizzandoci sul libro e sui personaggi: il suo detective è un uomo che raccoglie successi e insuccessi, imparando dai propri errori; è un protagonista molto “umano”: si è ispirata a una persona conosciuta realmente? o è soltanto frutto della sua creatività?
Il mio detective è frutto dell’immaginazione ma nasce anche dalla combinazione di tante caratteristiche che ho osservato nelle persone incontrate. Per uno scrittore che osserva e ascolta gli altri, è inevitabile che ciò che vede e sente, si rifletta poi nei suoi personaggi. Puoi anche attingere alle tue esperienze personali. Credo che sia davvero importante cercare di imparare dai nostri sbagli, e ho pensato che sarebbe stato interessante dare a Jim Clemo questa mia idea. Sono molto contenta che lei lo trovi un personaggio “umano“, perché per me è importantissimo che i miei personaggi sembrini il più reali possibile.
Focussing on your novel and on your characters, we noted that your detective is a man who collects successes and failings, learning from his mistakes; he is a very “human” character: were you inspired by a really knew person? Or has he come out of your imagination?
My detective is a product of my imagination, but he combines a number of characteristics that I have observed in people I’ve met. As a novelist you are always watching others and listening and what you see and hear inevitably makes its way into your characters. You also make use of your own experiences. I believe personally that it’s very important to try to learn from your mistakes and I thought it would be interesting to give Jim Clemo that kind of drive, too. I’m so pleased you think he is a ‘human’ character! It’s very important to me to try to make my characters feel as real as possible.
Come già detto, il suo scritto affronta molteplici tematiche estremamente attuali e discusse. Da parte dei lettori le è mai arrivata qualche critica riguardo alla sua opera o è sempre stata letta solo come un libro, quindi “opera di fantasia”?
La maggior parte dei lettori è consapevole che i libri sono opere di fantasia. Raramente sono stata contatta da qualcuno che si è sentiro turbato o offeso da quello che avevo scritto, e cerco sempre di rispondere con una motivazione. Nella scrittura di un libro, ogni decisione è stata esaminata e a volte messa in discussione da te stessa, dal tuo agente, dall’editore e dall’editor, prima che il libro venga pubblicato. Se poi le persone si lamentano, io cerco di spiegare tutto ciò che mi obiettano, sperando che alla fine, comprendano che sono state scelte ben ponderate, sebbene non le accettino comunque.
As already told, your writing faces a range of themes extremely topical and debated. From readers, did you receive any criticism concerning your books or have they been always considered only as books meaning “work of fiction”?
Most readers understand that the books are a work of fiction. Very rarely somebody will contact me to say that something they have read has upset or offended them. I always try to respond with an explanation. When you write novels, every decision you make has usually been examined and sometimes challenged by yourself, your agent and both editors and copy editors by the time the book hits the shelves. If people complain, I explain why I did whatever it is they object to, and I hope they will at least understand what the motivations were and that they were well- considered, even if they do not excuse me!
Ci piacerebbe conoscere i suoi gusti letterari: cosa legge nel tempo libero? C’è un autore o un filone letterario che ha influenzato la sua scrittura?
Leggo ogni giorno e spazio nei generi sin da quando ero una bambina, per me leggere è una passione ma è anche un modo per migliorare la mia scrittura. Ovviamente mi concentro sui gialli, in parte perché mi piacciono, ma anche perché ho bisogno di essere aggiornata su ciò che si trova sul mercato. Tra gli autori classici che amo ci sono Gabriel Garçia Mrquez e William Faulkner. Invece tra li autori contemporanei ci sono Kent Haruf, Anthony Doerr, Donna Tartt, James Lee Burke e molti altri ancora.
We would like to know something about your literary taste: what do you read in your spare time? Is there an Author or a literary genre that influenced your writing?
I read every day and I read very widely and I have done since I was a child. Reading is a passion and I also believe it is best way to improve my writing. Obviously, I do have a focus on crime, partly because I love it, but also because I need to be in touch with what is happening in the market. Classic authors I love include Gabriel Garcia Marquez and William Faulkner. More contemporary authors are Kent Haruf, Anthony Doerr, Donna Tartt, James Lee Burke and there are so many others…
Ultima domanda per Thrillernord, conosce il thriller nordico?
Si! Uno dei primi thriller nordici che è letto – ed è ancora il mio preferito – è stato Il senso di Smilla per la neve di Peter Høeg. Sono anche una grande fan di Camilla Läckberg, e Jo Nesbø e sono sempre alla ricerca di altri grandi autori nordici. Pochi anni fa ho visitato l’Islanda, e mi sono comprata un maglione tipico che amo indossare quando scrivo… spero così di essere contagiosa da un po’ di quel talento che gli islandesi hanno per la scrittura di gialli!!
One more question for Thrillernord… do you know nordic thriller?
Yes! One of the first Nordic thrillers I ever read – and it is still a favourite – was ‘Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow’ by Peter Høeg. I am also a huge fan of Camilla Läckberg, Jo Nesbø and always on the lookout for other great Nordic thrillers. I visited Iceland a few years ago and bought myself an Icelandic sweater which I love to wear when I’m writing. I hope a bit of that Icelandic crime-writing talent will rub off on me!
