From where and when did the idea for this book arrive? Was it difficult to develop?
I’d been thinking about doing a book on miracles for a while when two years ago I had an interesting luncheon with the Archbishop of Lecce. He told me that as a young priest in San Giovanni Rotondo he had been given the task of keeping vigil over the body of Padre Pio and that he had seen his stigmata disappear. I began doing research on Padre Pio specifically and stigmata in general and this book was born. As in some of my earlier books, I wanted to write about the potential compatibility of notions of faith and science.
Da cosa e quando è arrivata l’idea per questo libro? E’ stato difficile da sviluppare?
Pensai all’idea di scrivere un libro sui miracoli mentre, due anni fa, ebbi un interessante colloquio durante il pranzo con l’Arcivescovo di Lecce. Mi disse che, quando era un giovane prete a San Giovanni Rotondo, ebbe la possibilità di osservare il corpo di Padre Pio e che vide le stigmati sparire. Iniziai a fare ricerche specifiche su Padre Pio e sulle stigmati in generale ed il libro naque così. Come in alcuni dei miei primi libri, ho voluto scrivere della compatibilità delle nozioni di fede e scienza.
How many time did you spend looking for all the historical informations you need?
This book like all my books was fairly research intensive. I had to cover topics ranging from stigmata to Nazi mysticism, Holy relics to quantum physics. Typically I spend a year doing research and writing to produce a first draft.
Quanto tempo ha speso alla ricerca delle informazioni storiche di cui aveva bisogno?
Questo libro, come tutti I miei libri, ha avuto bisogno di molte ricerche. Ho dovuto coprire una gamma di argomenti che va dalle stigmati al misticismo nazista, dalle reliquie sante alla fisica quantistica. Di solito, ho bisogno di un anno di tempo per fare ricerche e scrivere per produrre una prima stesura.
Are you enthusiast of mysticism and religion? Do you prefer a particolar historical period?
Well, I’m a student of the history of religion and how it has shaped societies, particularly European societies, over the centuries. I suppose if I had a time machine and could only return to a single period, I’d choose Elizabethan England, a complex and fascinating time, and take in a Shakespeare play at the Globe…
E’ appassionato di misticismo e religione? Ha un periodo storico che più le interessa?
Sono studioso di storia della religione e di come questa abbia cambiato la società nei secoli, in particolare quella Europea. Penso che, se avessi una macchina del tempo e potessi tornare indietro ad un solo periodo, sceglierei l’Inghilterra Elizabettiana, un’epoca molto complessa ed affascinante, e andrei a vedere una rappresentazione di Shakespeare al Globe…
What is your favourite character of the novel and why? Can you see yourself in one in particular?
I’m fond of my new hero, Cal Donovan. As a professor of the history of religion at Harvard, he’s got a set of interests and a temperament quite similar to mine. I’m just finishing my second Cal Donovan book and I like him even more now.
Qual è il suo personaggio preferito del romanzo e perchè? Può ritrovarsi in uno in particolare?
Ho trovato il mio nuovo eroe, Cal Donovan. Essendo professore di storia della religione ad Harvard ha interessi e un temperamento simile al mio. Sto finendo di scrivere il mio secondo libro con Cal Donovan e questo personaggio mi piace sempre di più.
Can you say what is your favourite book written by you?
Two book, actually. Library of the Dead was my first published novel and its success led to a wonderful new career so of course it’s very special to me. But as far as subject matter, La Mappa Del Destino, was my favorite since it was about archaeology, one of my academic pursuits. In particular, it was about the stone-age painted caves of France, an area I studied as an archaeology student.
Potrebbe dire qual è il suo libro preferito scritto da lei?
Sono due I libri che preferisco. “La biblioteca dei morti” è stato il primo romanzo che ho pubblicato ed il suo successo mi ha portato ad un’incredibile carriera, quindi, ovviamente, è molto speciale per me. Ma, per il tema trattato, “La mappa del destino” è il mio preferito perchè parla di archeologia, una delle mie attività accademiche. In particolare, tratta delle grotte dipinte dell’epoca della pietra in Francia, un’area che ho studiato molto come studente di archeologia.
Are you satisfied about your work of the last years?
Writing continues to be the best job I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a lot of jobs!).
Si può ritenere soddisfatto del suo lavoro negli ultimi anni?
Scrivere continua ad essere il miglior lavoro che potessi avere (e ne ho ancora molto da fare!).
Have you ever read a nordic thriller? If yes, do you like the genre?
I’ve read many and love the atmospheric moodiness that seems to imbue the genre. If I were pressed to name a favorite I would choose Jar City by the Icelandic writer, Arnaldur Indridason. I’m also a big fan of Henning Mankell.
Ha mai letto un thriller nordico? Se si, le piace il genere?
Ne ho letti molti e amo l’atmosfera triste che sembra sempre ricoprire il genere. Se fossi obbligato a nominare un thriller nordico preferito, scegliere “Jar City” dell’Islandese Arnaldur Indridason. Sono anche un fan di Henning Mankell.
Do you have a favourite writer? And a favourite book in particular?
For sure, the American writer, John Steinbeck. My favorite of them is the rather lesser-known, Tortilla Flat. So funny and sad at the same time.
Ha uno scrittore che preferisce? Ed un libro preferito in particolare?
Certo, lo scrittore americano John Steinbeck. Il mio libro preferito dei suoi è il poco conosciuto “Tortilla Flat”. Molto divertente e triste allo stesso tempo.
I know you are particularly in love with Italy, can you leave us a dedication for all italians fans?
Well, it’s true, I do have a love affair with Italy. My message to my readers is quite simple: If you keep reading my books I will keep writing them!
So che ama particolarmente l’Italia, può lasciarci una dedica per tutti i fans italiani?
E’ vero, amo molto l’Italia. Il mio messaggio ai miei lettori italiani è molto semplice: se continuate a leggere I miei libri io continuerò a scriverne molti!
