A tu per tu con l’autore
First of all, I’d like to face the most incredible thing I found in “SnowBlind”: the extraordinary concreteness of senses. I could feel the bitter cold and snowflakes on my skin. Is this a particular effect you wanted to have in your book or it just freely flowed down your pen?
I deliberately wanted to put focus on the weather in Siglufjordur and northern Iceland, because I felt that both the small town and the weather could hopefully almost be like characters in the book. The cold weather there in winter is such an important factor for the people living there, and the fact that the sun disappears behind the mountains in November and only comes back in January, and the snow can really be very overwhelming.
Innanzitutto vorrei affrontare la cosa più incredibile che ho trovato ne “L’angelo di neve”, ovvero la straordinaria concretezza dei sensi. Potevo percepire il gelo e i fiocchi di neve sulla pelle. Questo effetto particolare era voluto o è nato da sé e in maniera più naturale?
Ho concentrato l’attenzione sul tempo atmosferico di Siglufjordur e dell’Islanda del Nord volutamente, ero convinto infatti che la piccola città e il tempo avrebbero potuto essere un po’ come dei personaggi veri e propri del libro. Il tempo gelido dell’inverno è un fattore importante per le persone che vivono lì, inoltre la neve e il semplice fatto che in Novembre il sole scompare dietro le montagne e ritorna solamente a Gennaio, possono davvero dare una sensazione di oppressione.
“Snowblind” has literally seized me thanks to the figure of Ari Thor. Did someone inspire this character? Do you have any peculiar traits in common?
When I created Ari Thor, I had been translating Agatha Christie novels for a long time in Iceland, and I remembered that Agatha Christie had said that she had regretted making her detectives, like Hercule Poirot, too old for the first book, so I made sure that Ari Thor was a young man when I created him. I wanted to create a young detective, a few years younger than I am, so that I could have some idea about what he is feeling. I am sure I have something in common with him, but most of his traits are of course quite fictional. But I can mention that in Snowblind he wants to learn the piano, and when I had written Snowblind, I also decided to start learning to play piano!
“L’angelo di neve” mi ha letteralmente catturato grazie alla figura di Ari Thor. C’è qualcuno in particolare che ha ispirato questo personaggio? Avete per caso qualche elemento in comune?
Quando ho creato Ari Thor, stavo traducendo in Islanda i libri di Agatha Christie da molto tempo, e mi sono ricordato che la Christie aveva detto di essersi pentita di aver creato dei detective un po’ troppo in là con gli anni per il primo di una serie di librie, quindi mi ero convinto a creare un protagonista giovane, con qualche anno in meno di me, in modo tale da poter capire cosa provasse. Sono sicuro di avere qualcosa in comune con lui, ma molte delle sue caratteristiche sono certamente inventate. Però posso dirvi che ne “L’angelo di neve” Ari Thor vuole imparare a suonare il pianoforte, e durante la stesura del libro decisi anche io di imparare a fare la stessa cosa!
“Snowblind” is the first episode of “The Dark Iceland Series”, which has reported considerable success. What’s the reason why you decided not to write “single” books?
When I had started writing about Ari Thor, there was interest from my publisher in more books about him, so that’s how the series started, and I have really enjoyed writing about him, and we now have five books set in the series in Siglufjordur. I have now started writing a new series in Iceland, about policewoman Hulda in Reykjavik, which will probably be three books, and maybe after that I would like to write a single book / standalone book.
“L’angelo di neve” è il primo episodio della serie “Dark Iceland” che ha riscosso davvero molto successo. Qual è il motivo per il quale non hai scelto di scrivere libri “singoli”?
Quando iniziai a scrivere di Ari Thor, il mio editore era interessato ad altri libri su di lui ed è questo il motivo per il quale iniziò la serie. Mi è piaciuto moltissimo scrivere di lui, e adesso abbiamo una serie di cinque libri ambientati a Siglufjordur. Ho appena iniziato a scrivere una nuova serie – che sarà composta probabilmente da tre libri – sempre ambientata in Islanda, a Reykjavik, con una protagonista donna, la poliziotta Hulda. Forse, dopo questo, potrei scrivere un libro “singolo”.
I realized that the approach to sentimental relationships was very important for the fulfillment of a great book. In particular the relationship between Ari Thor and Kristine was peculiar and, to some extent, unexpected. How much important is love in your crime novels?
For me, when writing (and reading) crime novels, the characters are really one of the most imporant things. A reader needs to understand the characters and get to know them, why they behave like they do, so I think that the love relationship is an important factor in the development of Ari Thor as a character.
Mi sono resa conto che l’approccio alle relazioni sentimentali è stato particolarmente importante per il raggiungimento di un ottimo libro. Nello specifico, la relazione tra Ari Thor e Kristine era caratteristica e per certi versi inaspettata. Quanta importanza ricopre l’amore nelle tue crime stories?
Per me, quando si scrivono (e si leggono) crime novels, una delle cose più importanti del libro sono i personaggi. Il lettore ha bisogno di capirli e ha bisogno di conoscerli, perché si comportano in un certo modo piuttosto che in un altro, perciò penso che la relazione d’amore sia un fattore importante nello sviluppo di Ari Thor come personaggio.
Let me ask you a mere curiosity: what’s your favourite Agatha Christie’s book? Considering that you translated many of them…
This is a difficult question. I have so many favorite books by Agatha Christie. My favorite is probably The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, such a great book that if she had only written that one book I think she would still be famous for it today. Another one I sometimes mention is The Murder on the Links, a really enjoyable early Poirot mystery, and also Evil Under the Sun, because that was the first Christie book I read.
Permettemi di chiederti una mera curiosità: qual è il tuo libro preferito di Agatha Christie? Se consideriamo il fatto che ne hai tradotti tanti…..
Questa è una domanda difficile. Ho tanti libri preferiti di Agatha Christie. Probabilmente il mio preferito è “L’assassinio di Roger Ackroyd”, un libro fantastico, tanto che se avesse scritto solo questo, al giorno d’oggi sarebbe famosa per lui. Un altro libro che cito qualche volta è “Aiuto, Poirot!”, uno dei primi casi di Poirot, e anche “Corpi al sole”, perché il primo libro di Agatha Christie che ho letto.
Have you ever read italian thrillers?
Unfortunately we do not get many Italian books translated in Iceland. But a few years ago I did actually start to study Italian, so I do understand a bit of this beautiful language – but I could not read a whole book yet though. The latest Italian novel I read was the Icelandic translation of Paolo Giordano’s La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi, a really excellent novel.
Hai mai letto thriller italiani?
Sfortunatamente non sono molti i libri italiani che vengono tradotti in Islanda. Ma in realtà qualche anno fa ho iniziato a studiare italiano, quindi capisco un po’ questa bellissima lingua – anche se non potrei leggere un libro intero, almeno per ora. L’ultimo libro italiano che ho letto è la traduzione islandese de “La solitudine dei numeri primi” di Paolo Giordano, un romanzo davvero eccellente.
Who are your favourite nordic authors? Or who are the nordic authors you have been guided by?
I have many favorite Nordic authors, who have all influenced me one way or another. I can mention Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, Vidar Sundstol and Johan Theorin, as well as of course Yrsa Sigurdardottir and Arnaldur Indridason from Iceland.
Quali sono i tuoi autori nordici preferiti o quelli a cui ti sei ispirato?
Ho tanti autori nordici preferiti, che mi hanno influenzato in un modo o in un altro. Posso citare Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, Vidar Sundstol e Johan Theorin… Ovviamente anche gli Islandesi Yrsa Sigurdardottir e Arnaldur Indridason.
