In your opinion, are there bad people, or they only are person who loose control and then are no longer able to get out of spyral of nastiness?
The idea of pure evil is something philosophers have been wrestling with for centuries; it’s certainly not something I would be arrogant enough to pronounce upon. I don’t think Judith is evil- she lacks certain moral inhibitions, we might say, but in her own peculiar way she also has a strong moral code.
Secondo il suo parere, esistono delle persone veramente cattive oppure sono solamente persone che perdono il controllo e non sono più in grado di uscire dalla spirale della cattiveria?
L’idea del male puro è qualcosa con cui i filosofi si sono arrovellati per secoli e certamente io non sono abbastanza arrogante da volermi pronunciare al riguardo. Io non credo che Judith rappresenti il male – si può dire che non possieda alcuni principi morali ma a suo modo, ha anche un rigido codice etico.
In both your novels, Judith gets a lot of things exploiting sex. Is it “correct” to suppose that sex is one of the strongest instrument of power that a woman has?
It may not be “correct”, but I believe it remains true. Judith uses every aspect of herself to get what she wants, physical and mental, but to me her greatest weapon is always her brain rather than her body.
In entrambi i suoi romanzi, Judith riesce ad ottenere molte cose sfruttando il sesso. E’ “corretto” supporre che il sesso sia una delle più alte forme di potere che una donna possiede?
Non direi “corretto”, ma credo che fondamentalmente sia vero. Judith usa ogni parte di sè per ottenere ciò che vuole, che sia fisico o mentale, ma credo che la sua più potente arma sia sempre la sua testa piuttosto che il suo corpo.
Between Judith’s misadventures and the life of Caravaggio, seem to be a lot a similarities. Do you think that she is more like this latter or Artemisia Gentilieschi, mentioned in the first chapter?
I think there are connections between Judith and both painters. With Artemisia it was the spirit of rebellion, and the pragmatism of violence which attracted me; in the case of Caravaggio it was his instability, his inability to ever stay still or fit in. He experienced the fulfilment of desire as a kind of death, and that’s what “Domina” is really about.
Tra le vicesittudini di Judith e la vita di Caravaggio sembrano esserci molte similitudini. Ritiene che la sua protagonista sia più simile a quest’ultimo o ad Artemisia Gentileschi, menzionata nel primo capitolo?
Credo che ci siano punti in comune tra Judith ed entrambi i pittori. Quello che mi ha attratto in Artemisia è statoil suo spirito di ribellione e il suo pragmatismo verso la violenza; nel caso di Caravaggio invece la sua instabilità, la sua incapacità di rimanere fermo o adattarsi. Concepiva l’appagamento del desiderio come una forma di morte, che è poi quello che realmente succede in “Domina”.
Which is the artist who better reflect your life and personality?
Art is such an important part of my life- at the moment I am thinking about a project on Suzanne Paladin, and hers is a biography I can certainly relate to.
Qual è l’artista che rispecchia meglio la sua vita e la sua personalità?
L’arte è una parte fondamentale dla mia vita – al momento sto elaborando un progetto su Suzanne Paladin, e la sua è una biografia con la quale vorrei cimentarmi.
Quale artista o opera, secondo lei, rappresenta meglio la violenza e la crudeltà, e quale invece è una perfetta rappresentazione della sensualità?
Tiziano per la sensualità, Caravaggio per la violenza. Mi affascina molto che l’unico dipinto che abbia mai firmato sia La Decollazione di San Giovanni Battista, con la sua firma sul sangue fresco del santo.
In you opinion, which is the artist or the work that represents better the violence and the cruelty, and which is instead the one that is a perfect represantation of sensuality?
Titian for sensuality, Caravaggio for violence. It fascinates me that the only picture he ever signed was the martyrdom of St John, with the signature in the saint’s fresh blood.
The world of art is really as obscure and ruthless as you describe it in you novel?
It really is. The art world is a place where a great deal of money meets a great deal of desire- corruption is the inevitable result.

Si, lo è veramente. Il mondo dell’arte è un posto in cui grandi quantità di denaro incontrano grandi quantità di desiderio. La corruzione è una conseguenza inevitabile.
In your book, your protagonist is really carefull about her look. Do you believe that fashion is a form of art comparable to the painting you have talked about, or it’s only a means that a woman can use to made her self worthy of a piece of art?
Fashion is a pleasure and a joy, and I do think it can be art, but I don’t think that an interest in fashion means a woman is unserious. Angela Carter said that ‘clothes are the visible woman”, and that dialogue between the self and the world, as expressed in clothes, is one which Judith engages in.
Nel suo libro, la sua protagonista presta molta attenzione al suo aspetto. Lei crede che la moda sia una forma d’arte paragonabile ai dipinti dei quali ci ha parlato o è soltanto uno strumento che una donna può usare per rendere lei stessa degna di un’opera d’arte?
La moda è un piacere ed anche una gioia e forse potrebbe essere una forma d’arte, ma io non credo che un interesse per l’aspetto renda una donna “poco seria” o superficiale. Angela Carter diceva che “i vestiti sono solo la copertina di una donna” (NDT), e questo dialogo tra la il sè e il mondo, espresso attraverso l’abbigliamento, è quello in cui Judith è impegnata.
Beside Judith, is there a character you are most tied to?
I am becoming very fond of Carlotta! In a way, she is a monster, but quite a loveable one!

How difficult has been to put together two differents narrative styles, like thriller and erotic literature which seem to be so differents?
I don’t think of the books as particularly within one genre or another, I just try to tell Judith’s story in a honest, entertaining and refreshing way.

Non penso ai libri inserendoli in un genere piuttosto che in un altro, ho semplicemente cercato di raccontare la storia di Judith in modo onesto, divertente e fresco.
