Hello from Scotland Marina and thank you for inviting me to talk about Charlie Cameron. He’s become so familiar to us he’s now a part of the family.
Un saluto dalla Scozia, Marina, e grazie per avermi invitato a parlare di Charlie Cameron. È diventato così intimo per noi, che ora fa parte della famiglia.
Thank you for having written such a powerful yet human thriller, telling the story of a disappeared girl. What was the element the story came from?
My wife Christine and I were staying in Crete at the time. It was at the end of the tourist season and a great time for beach walking especially late afternoon. A few days earlier my agent had advised me to write about Scotland and I was struggling with the idea, because, like my travels I wanted to write about far away places with strange sounding names. Anyway, Christine and I were walking along a local beach discussing the possibilities when Christine pointed to a couple with a baby in a pushchair in the distance and said, ‘What would happen if somebody stole that baby?’ I looked around, apart from them and us it was deserted. ‘How would that be possible?’ Unfazed, she said, ‘The wife goes in swimming, gets into trouble and he goes in to try and save her.’ I couldn’t get home fast enough to start writing Games People Play and invent a brand new set of characters.

Mia moglie Christine ed io ci trovavamo a Creta a quel tempo. Era la fine della stagione turistica e un ottimo momento per passeggiare sulla spiaggia, soprattutto nel tardo pomeriggio. Proprio pochi giorni il mio agente mi aveva consigliato di scrivere qualcosa sulla Scozia e stavo un po’ combattendo contro questa idea, perché, come per i miei viaggi, volevo scrivere di posti lontani con nomi strani. Ad ogni modo, Christine e io stavamo discutendo delle varie possibilità, camminando lungo una spiaggia del luogo, quando Christine ha indicato una coppia con un bambino in un passeggino in lontananza e ha detto: “Cosa accadrebbe se qualcuno rapisse quel bambino?” Mi sono guardato intorno, a parte loro e noi era deserto. “Come potrebbe accadere?” Impassibile, lei mi ha detto: “La moglie va a nuotare, ha un problema in acqua, rischia di annegare e il marito si tuffa per cercare di salvarla”. Non stavo più nella pelle all’idea di tornare a casa in fretta, iniziare a scrivere “Il gioco del killer” e inventare nuovi personaggi.
Charlie Cameron is a complex, multi-faceted man who particularly impressed me: is he completely fictional or is he based on a real person?
Like all of my characters, Charlie is a blend of people whose paths have crossed mine and a figment of my imagination.
Charlie Cameron è un uomo complesso e sfaccettato che mi ha particolarmente colpito: è completamente immaginario o è ispirato a una persona reale?
Come tutti i miei personaggi, Charlie è una mix tra le persone le cui strade hanno incrociato la mia e il frutto della mia immaginazione.
Your style, with many short sentences, is perfect for the genre. Is this your signature feature, does it come from some writer who influenced you?
I’m glad you asked this… you are the first person! I always enjoyed the earlier Mickey Spillane detectives and was particularly drawn to the style of writing. For me it adds pace and drama.
Il tuo stile, fatto di tante frasi brevi, è perfetto per il genere. Questa tua cifra distintiva ti è stata ispirata da qualche autore che hai particolarmente apprezzato?
Sono felice che tu l’abbia chiesto… sei la prima persona! Mi sono sempre piaciute le detective stories del primo Mickey Spillane ed ero particolarmente attratto dallo stile di scrittura. Per me aggiunge ritmo e pathos.
Kidnapping of children is a present-day topic: in Italy too we have dozens of children disappearing, and many times they are never to be found again. How is the situation in the UK?
Unfortunately, this is a global problem with children reduced to a commodity. The trend is growing in the UK as these horrifying figures for London show – From April 1 2021 to March 31 2022, Met Police recorded a total of 288 kidnappings and child abductions in the capital.
Il rapimento di bambini è argomento di attualità: anche in Italia: abbiamo dozzine di bambini che scompaiono e molte volte non vengono più ritrovati. Com’è la situazione nel Regno Unito?
Sfortunatamente, questo dei bambini trattati come merce, è un problema globale. La tendenza è in crescita nel Regno Unito, come mostrano questi dati terrificanti: a Londra, dal 1 aprile 2021 al 31 marzo 2022, la polizia metropolitana ha registrato un totale di 288 tra rapimenti e rapimenti di bambini.
Will we see detective Cameron struggling with his personal vendetta again?
Definitely at some point in Charlie’s journey this issue will raise it’s head. I have 2 possible outcomes in mind but will have to see which feels right at the time.
Vedremo di nuovo il detective Cameron alle prese con la sua vendetta personale?
Sicuramente a un certo punto del viaggio di Charlie questo problema emergerà di nuovo. Ho in mente due possibili snodi, ma dovrò vedere quale mi sembrerà più giusto in quel momento.
