Uno dei tuoi indovinelli prende come spunto alcuni titoli di famosi gialli della Golden Age. Fra gli scrittori classici a chi ti ispiri e come stile a chi pensi di assomigliare maggiormente?
Mi sono innamorata di Agatha Christie quando avevo otto anni: ho letto tutti i suoi libri durante una vacanza estiva e da allora li ho riletti ogni anno! Amo anche Dorothy L Sayers, Nicholas Blake, Ngaio Marsh, Marjorie Allingham, Georgette Heyer, Patricia Wentworth, Gladys Mitchell… Credo che il mio stile sia più simile a quello di Nicholas Blake, che era un fan della similitudine, ma tutti hanno ispirato il mio stile in qualche modo.
One of your riddles is inspired by some famous Golden Age mystery titles. Among the classic writers who inspired you? And who do you think your style looks like the most?
I fell in love with Agatha Christie when I was eight – I read all of her books during a summer holiday and have re-read them every year since! I also love Dorothy L Sayers, Nicholas Blake, Ngaio Marsh, Marjorie Allingham, Georgette Heyer, Patricia Wentworth, Gladys Mitchell…
I think my style is most like Nicholas Blake as he was a fan of the simile, but they have all inspired my style in some way.
Anch’io scrivo gialli e anche a me piace inserire indovinelli e rompicapo nei miei libri. Per me è una vera e propria ossessione. Anche per te è così? Se sì, quando è nata e quale è stata la scintilla che ha fatto nascere in te questa passione?
Che meraviglia! È bello conoscere (più o meno!) un collega appassionato di enigmistica. Anch’io adoro fare e creare cruciverba, anagrammi, ricerche di parole, quiz, puzzle di ogni tipo. Mio nonno, Jack, era un appassionato di enigmistica e credo che questo mi abbia ispirato. Era anche un abile musicista e matematico: l’enigmistica, la matematica e la musica hanno molto in comune, e il mio amore per tutte queste materie deriva da lui.
I also write mysteries and I also like to insert riddles and puzzles in my books. For me it’s a real obsession. The same goes for you? When it was born and what was the spark that gave birth to this passion in you?
How wonderful! It’s lovely to meet (kind of!) a fellow puzzle afficionado. I’ve also loved doing, and making, crosswords, anagrams, word searches, quizzes – puzzles of all kinds. My grandfather, Jack, was a keen puzzler and I think that inspired me. He was also an accomplished musician and mathematician – puzzles, maths and music have lots in common, and my love for all of these subjects came from him.
Per il personaggio di Lily hai preso ispirazione da qualcuno che conosci?
Il personaggio di Lily non è basato su una sola persona, ma alcune parti di lei riflettono aspetti di me e dei miei amici! Io, per esempio, amo il ricamo, i corsetti, Bowie e la letteratura, ma altri aspetti provengono da persone che rimarranno anonime!
Did you take inspiration for Lily’s character from someone you know?
Lily’s character isn’t based on any one person, but parts of her reflect aspects of me and my friends! I, for example, love embroidery, corsets, Bowie and literature, but other aspects come from people who shall remain unnamed!
Dal tuo libro si evince chiaramente l’influenza che ha avuto il giallo classico nella tua formazione di scrittrice. C’è qualcuno in particolare che ti ha schiuso le porte di questo meraviglioso universo o è stata una tua scelta personale?
Mia madre è un’appassionata lettrice e il mio amore per la lettura è nato da lei. Il mio particolare amore per i gialli classici, però, è nato quando la mia vicina di casa mi prestava le sue copie della Christie. Ne leggevo una in un paio d’ore e poi tornavo a prenderne un’altra! Una volta diventata dipendente dalla Christie, un bibliotecario mi ha presentato altri scrittori della Golden Age che pensavano mi sarebbero piaciuti, in particolare Dorothy L. Sayers. Sono molto grata a tutti loro per aver contribuito alla mia educazione al giallo.
Your book clearly shows the influence that the classic mystery had in your formation as a writer. Has anyone in particular opened the doors of this wonderful universe to you or was it your personal choice?
My mum is a keen reader and my love for reading came from her. My particular love for a classic mystery, though, started when my next door neighbour lent me her copies of Christie. I would read one in a couple of hours then go back for another! Once I was addicted to Christie, a librarian introduced me to other Golden Age writers they thought I’d like, particularly Dorothy L Sayers. I’m very grateful for all of their input in my mystery education.
Oltre ai gialli ti piace qualche altro genere letterario?
Amo la narrativa letteraria, l’horror, la fantascienza, il fantasy, il romance… sono pochi i generi che non abbraccio e non scrivo!
In addition to thrillers, do you like any other literary genre?
I love literary fiction, horror, science fiction, fantasy, romance… there are few genres that I don’t embrace and write!
Per i prossimi libri pensi di continuare con il giallo o virerai verso altri generi?
Il mio ultimo giallo natalizio, Murder on the Christmas Express, sta per essere pubblicato nel Regno Unito e sto scrivendo il prossimo. Tuttavia, ho anche intenzione di scrivere narrativa letteraria e storie gotiche e di fantasmi.
For the next books do you plan to continue with thriller or will you veer towards other genres?
My latest Christmas mystery, Murder on the Christmas Express, is about to be published in the UK, and I am currently writing my next. I also plan, however, to write literary fiction as well as gothic/ghost stories.
Quali topoi del giallo ti piacciono maggiormente e quali invece detesti?
Adoro il topos dell’omicidio nella casa di campagna, come credo dimostri questo libro! Adoro anche le convenzioni come il ricongiungimento di parenti estranei, i gemelli, gli enigmi delle stanze chiuse e degli omicidi impossibili… Non odio nessun topos, penso che ci sia sempre un modo di sovvertire un topos per dargli nuova vita.
Which thriller topoi do you like most and which ones do you hate?
I love the country house murder trope, as I think this book shows! I also love conventions such as bringing estranged relatives together, twins, locked room/impossible murder puzzles… I don’t hate any trope, I think there’s always a way of subverting a trope to bring new life to it.
Nel caso di una trasposizione cinematografica del libro a chi affideresti la regia e la parte di Lily e Tom?
Ooh, bella domanda! Mi piacerebbe che fosse Emerald Fennel a dirigere, con Gwendolyn Christie a interpretare Lily e James McAvoy a interpretare Tom. Che sogno meraviglioso!
In the case of a film adaptation of the book to whom would you entrust the direction and the role of Lily and Tom?
Ooh, lovely question! I’d like Emerald Fennel to direct, with Gwendolyn Christie to play Lily and James McAvoy to play Tom. What a wonderful dream that is!
Quando inizi a scrivere un giallo hai già tutta la trama in testa oppure ti fai guidare dalla creatività e rifinisci la storia in corso d’opera man mano che la scrittura va avanti?
Ho sempre tracciato i punti chiave della storia, basandomi sulla struttura in cinque atti. Conosco anche gli archi narrativi del protagonista e dell’antagonista e so qual è il cuore e il tema della storia. Inoltre, per qualche motivo, ho sempre bisogno di avere l’ultima riga a posto prima di poter scrivere la prima. In pratica, devo sapere dove finisce la storia prima di poterla iniziare! A parte questo, mi piace lasciare che i personaggi e la storia prendano un po’ il sopravvento, pur rimanendo all’interno dello schema iniziale.
When you start writing a mystery do you already have the whole plot in mind or do you let yourself be guided by creativity and refine the story in progress as the writing progresses?
I always have key points of the story mapped out, based around the five act structure. I also always know the arcs of the protagonist and antagonist and know what the heart and theme of the story is about. I also, for some reason, always need to have the last line in place before I can write the first. Basically, I need to know where the story ends before I can begin! Other than that, I like to let the characters and story take over a little, while keeping within the initial outline.
Hai altri progetti in cantiere?
Contemporaneamente alla stesura del mio prossimo giallo natalizio, The Christmas Jigsaw Murders, sto lavorando a un thriller di grande impatto, intitolato Little Red Death, che combina fiaba e meta-omicidio. Sto anche lavorando a un giallo per bambini, a un romanzo letterario e a diverse sceneggiature televisive e radiofoniche. Mi piace mescolare le cose per intrattenere il mio cervello iperattivo!
Do you have any other projects you’re working on?
At the same time as writing my next Christmas mystery, The Christmas Jigsaw Murders, I’m also working on a high-concept thriller called Little Red Death which combines fairytale and meta-murder. I’m also working on a children’s mystery, a literary novel, and several TV and radio scripts. I like to mix things up to keep my hyper-active brain entertained!
