A tu per tu con l’autore
A tu per tu oggi incontra un autore molto particolare: impossibile dargli una definizione, è uno scrittore, uno sceneggiatore per la tv e per il cinema, un regista, insomma raccoglie in sé quante più manifestazione artistiche possiate immaginare. E’ Joe R. Lansdale, e se non ci credete, leggete cosa ci ha raccontato in questa interessante intervista.
Iniziamo con una domanda di routine…
Let’s start with a standard question…
Hap e Leonard… Quando ha scritto “Una stagione selvaggia” aveva già in mente la serie su di loro? Sono stati i personaggi a chiamarla o è stato il riscontro del pubblico? Cosa è scattato nella sua mente creativa?
No, è stato tutto assolutamente casuale. Volevo scrivere un romanzo che trattasse degli eventi tra gli anni ’60 e i primi anni ’70, la cultura alternativa, o underground, più generalmente conosciuta come hippy. Volevo esprimere il mio dissenso verso la guerra del Vietnam e allo stesso tempo scrivere un thriller che fosse un crescendo di tensione… Leonard inizialmente si affacciò nei miei pensieri come un personaggio minore, ma non poteva rimanere fuori dalla trama, poi ho scoperto che era gay ed aveva un’amicizia di lunga data con Hap. Mi è piaciuto molto scrivere il libro, e una volta terminato credevo di aver chiuso anche con questi due ragazzi, ma Hap era così simile a me, e la sua storia così familiare, che tre anni dopo l’ho riproposto in Mucho Mojo. E’ li che ho capito di avere per le mani una serie.
Hap and Leonard…. When you wrote “Savage season” did you have already in mind the series based on their characters?
I didn’t. It was a total accident. I wanted to write a novel that dealt with the sixties and early seventies experience, the alternate culture, or underground culture, also broadly referred to as hippy culture. I was against the Vietnam War, and I wanted to touch on that, and still write a slow-burn thriller. Leonard showed up, and was originally a minor character, but he couldn’t stay out of the mix, and then I discovered he was gay and that he and Hap had a long friendship. I loved writing the book, and when finished, I thought I was through with those guys. But Hap was so much like me, and therefore his background so accessible, three years later I returned to him in Mucho Mojo. That’s when I knew I had a series.
Hap e Leonard sono due personaggi che si potrebbe definire un po’ fuori dal comune: rissosi, ironici, teneri e con un forte senso della giustizia; lei che rapporto ha con la giustizia? E con la morale?
Credo che si possa dire che le storie e i romanzi di Hap e Leonard siano spesso opere di morale, sebbene io preferisca considerarle opere etiche, e loro frequentemente falliscono o violano il loro proprio codice per sopravvivere o per salvare qualcuno. Hanno molta più fiducia nella giustizia che nella legge. Cercano di ricondurre sempre le azioni dalla parte del bene, anche se a molti questo non fa comodo, e qualche volta falliscono drammaticamente, mentre altre volte la ricerca di giustizia si trasforma in vendetta, e non è una buona cosa. Hap e Leonard non sono perfetti, non sono i classici eroi, e le cose non si rivelano mai completamente bianche o nere, ma lasciano al lettore il tempo per sperare in un buon esito per le loro ricerche. La maggior parte delle volte però ottengono risultati dal gusto dolce-amaro.
Hap and Leonard are two out of ordinary characters: quarrelsome, ironic, tender and with a strong sense of justice; how is your concern about justice? And about morality?
I guess you could say the Hap and Leonard stories and novels are often morality plays, though I tend to think of them as ethic plays, and frequently they fail or violate their own code to survive or to protect one another. They care more about justice than rule of law. They try and set right things that are wrong that others won’t set right. Sometimes they fail dramatically, or it turns into vengeance more than justice, which is not a good thing. Hap and Leonard are flawed. They are not classic heroes, and things never turn out to be completely black and white, but Hap and Leonard give us a bit of time to hope for them in their quest, hope they will triumph. Mostly their results are bitter-sweet.
Nel suo ultimo libro “Bastardi in salsa rossa”, i tutori dell’ordine non ci fanno una bella figura e non si può certo negare che sempre più spesso, la polizia finisca sui giornali a causa di abusi di potere; secondo lei perché la legge e la giustizia difficilmente si conciliano?
Io non credo che ciò sia vero per tutti i tutori dell’ordine, ma certamente è valido per alcuni. Siamo sempre propensi a percepire il brutto e la criminalità e non prestiamo attenzione alle cose positive. Quando la notte sono nel mio letto, mi fa piacere sapere che là fuori ci sono dei poliziotti. Perché i “cattivi” devono essere individuati, e purtroppo ce sono in giro (e ultimamente sembra che ce ne sia una piena). La verità è che grazie alla tecnologia e alle videocamere, è stato possibile visionare molto di più di ciò che si credeva. Tutto sommato non credo sia giusto usare lo stesso parametro di giudizio per tutta la polizia, e allo stesso tempo però non possiamo identificare tutti i poliziotti come bravi cittadini pronti a proteggerci in nome della legge. Alcuni abusando del proprio potere.
In your last novel, “Rusty puppy”, officers of the law don’t look so good and it cannot be denied that, more and more often, police are in the papers due to abuse of power; in your opinion, why are law and justice hardly in line?
I don’t think that represents most cops, but it certainly represents some. We always here about the crime, but we don’t hear about the good things. I like knowing the cops are out there when I lay down to sleep at night. But the bad ones have to be pointed out. And there are bad ones, and lately there seem to be a spate of them, but truth is, technology, cameras, have revealed a lot of what’s gone on for a long time. But, again, don’t paint all cops with the same brush, but on the other hand, don’t paint all cops as fine upstanding citizens protecting us with the law. Some are abusing that power.
Che tipo di relazione ha con le armi?
Ho un fucile avuto in eredità. Mi piacerebbe poter gettare tutte le armi nell’oceano, ma non è realistico. Credo che debbano esserci leggi più severe sul tipo di armi che i cittadini possano possedere, sulla quantità, il tipo di munizioni da poter vendere, controlli più efficaci nelle periferie, sulla vendita di armi usate e così via. Un tempo le persone potevano possedere una pistola per difesa personale da tenere in casa o per la caccia, e c’erano delle restrizioni, ma sembra che siano volate via dalla finestra. La cosa strana e triste è che un terzo della popolazione sta discutendo delle leggi sulle armi in questi giorni. Molti Americani vogliono delle leggi più responsabili, ed io sono più scoraggiato ora che mai. Questo è un grande paese ma sta andando fuori strada. Infatti, la maggior parte dei paesi, il mondo, sembrano essere andati fuori strada. Sicuramente è dovuto al fatto che oggi siamo più consapevoli di tutto ciò che accade fuori, ma c’è anche un incremento di popolazione di nazionalismo. Niente di tutto questo è un bene. Gran parte della colpa la attribuisco ai ventiquattro canali di informazione. Devono necessariamente riempire gli spazi con qualcosa, e le cattive notizie si vendono meglio di quelle buone. FOX NEWS o FOX NOT SO MUCH NEWS (sarebbe “Fox non molte novità”, è un modo ironico di chiamare il noto canale Fox news), non è altro che un mezzo di propaganda conservatrice. Questa tv di propaganda è qualcosa che pensavo non avremmo mai avuto negli Stati Uniti, almeno non così, è diventato il canale di Trump.
What kind of relationship do you have with arms?
I have a shotgun I inherited. I wish all guns could go in the ocean, but its not realistic. I think there aren’t to be tougher laws about the kinds of weapons citizens can own, how many, the types of ammunition that can be sold, stronger background checks, buy back programs, and so on. There was a time when people could own a gun for protection, keep it at home, or have it for hunting. But there were restrictions. Those have gone out the window. The weird and unfortunate thing is about one third of our population are running the gun laws these days. Most Americans want responsible gun laws. I am more disheartened now than ever before. This is a great country, but it’s gone off track. In fact, most countries, the world, seems to have gone off track. It’s mostly due to the fact that we are all more aware of everything that goes on in the world, but there’s an increase in population and an increase in nationalism. None of which is good. I blame the twenty-four news channels for much of it. They have to fill the air with something, and bad news sells better than good. FOX NEWS, or FOX NOT SO MUCH NEWS, is nothing but a conservative propaganda arm. It’s propaganda TV, something I never thought we would have in the US, not like this. It’s become the Trump channel.
Quando si parla di lei, dal mio punto di vista, non si può certo definirla solo un autore di thriller, o di fumetti o di romanzi… è molto eclettico e ho letto che le piacerebbe essere “etichettato” come lansdaliano: è un modo diplomatico per dire che bisognerebbe evitare le etichettature?
Si potrebbe prendere un singolo lavoro e dargli un’etichetta, ma dal momento in cui si scrive un po’ di tutto, quel marchio non è più giusto per lo scrittore, sebbene lo sia per quella particolare storia. Nel mio caso, molto di quello che scrivo è un miscuglio ed è difficile da classificare, quindi se proprio dobbiamo dargli una definizione, credo che lansdaliano, sia l’unica che che si avvicini alla verità.
In my view, we cannot describe you only as a thriller Author, or comics, or novel… you are very eclectic and I read that you would like to be “labelled” as lansdalian: is it a diplomatic way to say that man must avoid labelling?
You might point at a particular piece and brand it, but if you write all manner of things, the brand then becomes incorrect for the writer, even if it’s correct for the story. In my case, much of what I write is mixed and hard to brand. If you must brand it, call it Lansdaleian, as that’s the only thing that comes close to fitting.
Libri, cinema, televisione: c’è qualcos’altro che le piacerebbe fare?
Ho scritto molti romanzi, racconti, fumetti e sceneggiature cinematografiche che non sono state realizzate. Ho scritto sceneggiature per film di animazione come La serie di Batman e di Superman, un altro film su Batman (Il figlio di Batman) ed anche una sceneggiatura per un show televisivo su Hap e Leonard. In questi giorni sto lavorando molto di più su quei progetti, ma anche nei film, produzione, e per quanto possibile nella regia. Ma continuo a dedicarmi alla scrittura, voglio fare degli spettacoli ed ho scritto delle poesie. Inoltre ho avviato un collaborazione con mio figlio e mia figlia. Mi tengo impegnato come sempre.
Books, movies, TV: is there something more you would like to do?
I’ve written a lot of novels, short stories, comics, and film scripts that never got made. I had some scripts made for animation, BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES, SUPERMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES, a Batman animated movie, SON OF BATMAN, and a script I did for the Hap and Leonard TV show was made. But I’ve sold many scripts. I am doing more in that department these days, as well as more in film, producing, and possibly directing. But I’m still writing. I want to do more plays, and I’ve even done some poetry. I’m also doing collaborations with my son and daughter. So, staying busy as always.
Ultima domanda: cosa legge? Conosce il thriller nordico?
Ho letto alcuni thriller nordici, ma davvero pochi. Leggo moltissimo, tutto ciò che mi interessa, romanzi e non, fumetti e opere teatrali. Nelle ultime due settimane ho riletto,in una nuova edizione con storie inedite, molti racconti di Continental Op di Daniel Hammett. Ho letto anche un libro, una sorta di saggio, sulle imprese di un serial killer del ventesimo secolo, chiamato The man from the train, che è anche il titolo del volume. Ho letto Last flag Flying di Darryl Ponicsan, che ha scritto uno dei miei romanzi preferiti Tom Mix died for your sins. Sto leggendo alcuni racconti brevi di Robert Silverberg ed alcune storie che fanno parte di un vasta collezione di Irving Shaw, e da una collezione altrettanto vasta di Eudora Welty. Leggo due o tre libri contemporaneamente. Ne ho uno per quando vado in bagno, uno per la sera prima di dormire, e durante il giorno un romanzo, o dei racconti. Ogni settimana guardo anche molti film e serie tv. Mi piace farne il pieno. Con mia moglie guardo molti programmi sui crimini o di fantascienza, e guardo anche le serie tv tratte dai fumetti. Sono cresciuto con quella roba e ne ho scritta io a mia volta. Sto leggendo anche una bella serie di fumetti sul personaggio di Harley Quinn, creato da Paul Dini, ed altri autori. Diciamo che sono sui tre o quattro libri a settimana, a volte uno in più, a volte uno in meno, ma la media è questa. Scrivo per circa tre ore al giorno, lavoro sui film, con gli agenti e gli editori, e due o tre volte a settimana collaboro con i miei figli, o di persona o per email, perciò sono un ragazzo davvero impegnato.
One more question: what do you read? Do you know nordic thriller?
I have read a few Nordic thrillers, but have read only a few. I read a lot and everything that interests me, fiction and non-fiction, comics, plays. Between last week and this week so far, I’ve reread a lot of Dashiel Hammett’s Continental Op stories in a new edition with some uncollected stories. I read a non-fiction book on a turn of the twentieth century serial killer called The Man from The Train, also the title of the book. I read LAST FLAG FLYING by Darryl Ponicsan who wrote one of my favorite novels, TOM MIX DIED FOR YOUR SINS. I’ve been reading some Robert Silverberg short stories, some stories from a huge IRVING SHAW collection, stories from an equally huge Eudora Welty collection. I read two or three books at a time. I have one for bathroom visits, one to read before sleep at night, and during the day I have a novel, or perhaps short stories. I also watch several films or TV series a week. I like to gorge on them. My wife and I have a number of crime shows and science fiction shows we watch, and I watch all the comic book TV series. I grew up on that stuff and have written for it. I’m also reading a huge collection of comics about the character Harley Quinn by Paul Dini, who created the character, as well as other comic writers. I average three or four books a week. Now and then less, now and then more, but that’s the average. I write about three hours a day, deal with film work, agents and editors, collaborate two to three times a week with my kids either in person or by email, so I’m a busy boy.
