A tu per tu incontra oggi Sarah Pinborough, una scrittrice inglese appassionata di thriller e fantasy. Thrillernord ha recensito per voi Dietro ai suoi occhi ed Omicidio a Whitehall.
Scrivere, che sia una sceneggiatura o un romanzo, è sempre un mestiere complicato: quanto è differente l’ approccio fra un romanzo e una sceneggiatura?
Sono molto differenti tra di loro – soprattutto perché la sceneggiatura è più corta, ed ogni singola parola è importante. Inoltre, la sceneggiatura è quasi sempre completamente pianificata, ancora prima di iniziare a scriverla, mentre il romanzo (anche se sei una pianificatrice come me) richiede una stesura più fluida. Tra l’altro viene riscritta più volta, è un lavoro di collaborazione, di squadra. Ci sono ad esempio i produttori che possono dire la propria nella storia, ed altri aspetti, come i costi di produzione, da tenere in considerazione. L’unica cosa che romanzo e sceneggiatura hanno in comune, è il ruolo fondamentale della struttura. E’ necessario avere una valida struttura, per evitare che vada tutto in pezzi.
The art of writing, either it’s script or it’s novel, is always a complex business: how different is the approach between a novel and a script?
The two are very different – primarily because a script is so much shorter and every word counts. Also, a script is nearly always completely planned out before you start, whereas a novel – even if you’re a planner like me – is a more fluid process. Also, invariably, the script gets re-written a lot more because it is more collaborative. There are producers etc who all have a say in the story and there are other considerations like costing that they have to consider. The one thing that scripts and thriller novels have in common, however, is that structure is everything. You have to get the structure right or else it all falls apart.
Esiste sempre una metafora all’interno di un libro che, come questo, ha a che fare con il lato oscuro di noi, una lotta fra il bene e il male che risiedono nel nostro inconscio. Riportando la storia ai giorni nostri riusciremmo a combattere i nostri demoni o siamo diventati codardi e troppo concentrati a correre e digitare?
Ah! e’ difficile da dire… in sostanza io non credo che le persone siano cambiate così tanto. Mi chiedo se forse non siamo tutti un po’ troppo sicuri che le nostre idee siano sempre giuste, ma magari è così da sempre.. Almeno con uno smarthphone si possono fare chiamate e mandare messaggi per avere una conferma!
It always exists, inside a book, a metaphor that, such in your novel, deals with the dark side of us, the fight between Good and Evil that live in our unconscious. Updating the story nowadays, do you think we would be able to fight our own demons or we are too cowards and focused on running and typing on smartphones?
Ha! It’s hard to say.. I don’t think people have changed that much in essence. I wonder if maybe we’re all just a little bit too determined that our views are right. But maybe that’s always been the way. At least with a smartphone you can call or text for back up!
Il romanzo rende omaggio a diverse figure della letteratura classica. Fra i romanzi di quel genere , quale l’ ha influenzata di più nella stesura ?
Sicuramente il libro che mi ha influenzato di più è “La scomparsa dell’Erebus” di Dan Simmon. Ho amato il modo in cui ha preso fatti storici reali e personaggi, ed ha tessuto un racconto soprannaturale intorno a loro per creare qualcosa di nuovo. Infatti tutti i personaggi di “Omicidio a Whitehall” sono reali (i giornali riproducono gli originali dell’epoca), ed io ne ho usato i dettagli, come fossero uno scheletro sul quale costruire una nuova storia. Credo di essere stata influenzata anche da libri come Dracula ovviamente, e Lo strano caso del dottor Jakyll e Mr Hyde.
Your novel pays homage to different classical literature figures. Among the novels belonging to this kind of genre, which one did you influence more in writing the book?
Actually the book that influenced me the most was Dan Simmons’ The Terror. I loved how he took real historical events and people and wove a supernatural tale around them to create something new. So nearly all the people and events in Mayhem are real (All the newspaper reports are original ones from the time) and I’ve used the details from those as a skeleton to build something new on. I think I was also influenced by the tone of books such as Dracula, obviously, and The Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Sentiremo ancora parlare del Dottor Bond? Non nego che mi piacerebbe tornare a quelle atmosfere insieme al protagonista!
Si c’è un sequel! E’ uscito da poco e si chiama “Murder”. Conclude la storia ma troveremo un Mr Bond in difficoltà. E più cupo di “Omicidio a Whitehall” sotto molti aspetti, ma ne sono davvero soddisfatta. Ho voluto attingere maggiormente dalla sua vita reale e dalle sue esperienze, anche di crimini veri, per legare tutto insieme. E’ in buona parte costruito attorno al tema della pazzia.
Haven’t we heard the last from Doctor Bond? I would really like to come back to those atmospheres with him !
There is a sequel! It’s been out for a while and is called Murder. It finishes the story off and puts poor Mr Bond through some more paces. It’s darker than Mayhem in a lot of ways and I was really pleased with it. I wanted to use more of his real life experiences and some more real life crimes to tie it all in. It’s very much built around the theme of madness.
Per quanto riguarda invece la letteratura contemporanea chi predilige?
Per la narrativa contemporanea mi risulta difficile rispondere, ultimamente sto leggendo molti autori emergenti, perché ne vengono inviati parecchi e io preferisco leggere romanzi individuali piuttosto che la serie completa di lavori di qualcuno. Comunque sono una grande fan di Stephen King, John Connolly e Gillian Flynn. Mi piacciono soprattutto i thriller, o i thriller con elementi soprannaturali, e mi piace quando mi imbatto in qualcosa di inusuale che abbia quel 10% in più che lo rende davvero speciale. Ho appena letto un libro che si intitola “The Winters” che uscirà alla fine dell’anno, e che è una sorta di rivisitazione di “Rebecca” (Alfred Hitchcock), ed è semplicemente brillante!
Concerning contemporary literature, who’s your favourite Author?
In contemporary fiction it’s very hard to say because I read a lot of debut authors these days because I get sent quite a few and so I love a lot of individual novels rather than a whole set of someone’s work. However, I’m a big fan of Stephen King, John Connolly, Gillian Flynn. I do love thrillers best, or supernatural thrillers, and I love it when I find something unusual or with that extra 10% that makes them really special. I just read a book called ‘The Winters’ which comes out later this year and is a sort of Rebecca re-telling, and it’s just brilliant.
Conosce il thriller nordico? C’è un autore che l’ha colpita più degli altri?
Dovrei leggere più autori nordici, ma penso che i libri della serie Dark Iceland di Ragnar Jonasson siano fantastici, l’ho incontrato a qualche festival di scrittori, e sembra un uomo molto simpatico.
Do you know nordic thriller? Is there some Author you appreciate particularly?
I need to read more nordic authors but I think Ragnar Jonasson’s Dark Iceland books are great and having seen him at a few writers’ festivals, he seems a very nice man too.
