A tu per tu incontra oggi Catriona Child, autrice di una narrativa a tratti fantasiosa che nasce dal grande amore dell’autrice per la musica.
Veniamo a Trackman. Nel romanzo il protagonista è un ragazzo che “chiude” la porta del proprio dolore. Si è ispirata a qualcuno in particolare per questo personaggio? Come mai ha deciso di scrivere la storia di un ragazzo sofferente?
L’idea di Trackman mi venne quando mio marito mi raccontò un suo sogno Si trovava su un treno della metropolitana con una donna che piangeva. Un altro passeggero allora le diede un paio di cuffie, e quando lei le indossò iniziarono ad uscire delle forme strane e dei colori, e smise di piangere. Il sogno fu così reale che gli rimase impresso. Mi ha sempre affascinato il modo in cui la musica può far riaffiorare specifici ricordi e come alcune canzoni possano associarsi a particolari momenti della nostra vita. Dalla fusione di questi due aspetti, è nato Trackman. In verità non avevo pianificato di scrivere la storia di un ragazzo travagliato, ma il mio protagonista è sempre stato un uomo nella mia testa e sapevo che doveva esserci un buon motivo per cui era diventato Trackman. E’ stato scelto perchè si trascina dietro un terribile dolore, e trasformandosi in una sorta di supereroe che aiuta la gente, prima o poi dovrà affrontare anche il suo passato.
Let’s talk about Trackman. In your novel the protagonist is a boy who decides to “close” the door of his pain. Were you inspired by someone in particular for this character? Why did you decide to write the story of a suffering boy?
The idea for Trackman came from a dream that my husband had. He dreamt that he was on a subway train and a woman was crying. Another passenger handed her a set of headphones and when she put them on, all these strange shapes and colours started to appear and the woman stopped crying. It was such a vivid dream that it stayed with him. I’d always been interested in the way that music can evoke specific memories and how certain songs can be associated with moments in your life. The two things seemed to fuse together and I came up with the idea of the Trackman. I never actively decided to write about a suffering boy. The Trackman was always male in my head and I knew there had to be some reason as to why he became the Trackman. He was chosen because he’s carrying this terrible pain around with him and, in becoming the Trackman and helping others, he finally has to face his own past.
Bullismo. altro tema trattato nel romanzo. Cosa pensa di questo fenomeno sempre più diffuso?
Mi preoccupa molto, soprattutto perché ho due bambini e non potrei sopportare che qualcosa del genere accadesse loro. E’ uno di quegli odiosi tratti umani davanti al quale ci sentiamo impotenti e sembra impossibile da sradicare. Per questa generazione poi è differente perché oggi ci sono tanti modi diversi ed anonimi in cui si possono attaccare gli altri. Uno degli aspetti negativi di internet e dei social è che le persone li utilizzano come piattaforme per poter diffondere odio. E’ difficile evitare i bulli quando possono raggiungerti anche dentro casa con questi mezzi.
Bullying is another theme you developed in your novel. What do you think about this increasingly widespread phenomenon?
It really worries me, particularly because I have two small children and I’d hate for anything like that to happen to them. It’s one of those ugly human traits that we seem powerless to eradicate. It’s different for this generation though, because there are now so many different and anonymous ways that you can attack others. One of the downsides of the internet and social media is the way people feel they can use it as a platform to spread hate. It’s difficult to avoid the bullies if they can follow you into your home like that.
Come mai ha deciso di parlarne nel suo romanzo?
Senza dilungarmi troppo, il romanzo affronta le devastanti (e potenzialmente non intenzionali) conseguenze che possono comportare gli atti di bullismo. Credo che tutti dovremmo essere consapevoli di quanto sia pericoloso il bullismo e di come possa degenerare in modo incontrollato. Capita spesso che i ragazzi che lo subiscono abbiano difficoltà a parlarne con qualcuno, e questo è un aspetto che bisogna assolutamente rivalutare e cambiare.
Why did you decide to talk about it in your novel?
Without giving too much away, the novel deals with the devastating (and potentially unintentional) consequences that can happen as a result of bullying. I think it’s important that we are all aware of how dangerous bullying can be and how it can escalate out of control. Guys in particular often find it hard to talk to someone if they’re experiencing a situation such as bullying, so we need to challenge that and change it.
La Musica. Molteplici le citazioni musicali e i titoli elencati, addirittura danno il nome ai capitoli del romanzo. Ha attinto dalla sua conoscenza o si è fatta aiutare da qualcuno? Se si, da chi?
Solo da me stessa. La musica ha sempre avuto una fondamentale importanza per me. Fin da piccolissima i mei genitori mi misero in camera un giradischi, così sono cresciuta ascoltando musica, non solo ninna nanne o canzoni da bambini ma anche le colonne sonore dei film che amava mio padre e i dischi rock ‘n’ Roll di mia madre. Sicuramente la passione e il gusto eclettico in fatto di musica derivano prprio dai quei primi anni di vita in cui ascoltavo di tutto, compresi i vecchi e ricercati dischi.
Music. There are many musical references and song titles, actually they named the chapters of the novel. Is it your personal knowledge or someone helped you? If so, who was?
That was me. Music has always been hugely important to me. From a very early age my parents put a record player in my bedroom, so I grew up listening to, not only nursery rhymes and children’s songs, but my Dad’s movie soundtracks and my Mum’s 50s Rock ‘n’ Roll records. I think my love of music and my eclectic taste in music comes from those early days of rifling through their record collection and listening to anything and everything.
Trackman è il suo romanzo di debutto: ho letto dei numerosi, ed originali lavori che ha fatto prima di diventare una scrittrice: le esperienze passate hanno un ruolo nel suo proecesso creativo? Pensa che uno scrittore debba in qualche modo “sporcarsi le mani” per essere più credibile con le sue storie?
Trackman è ambientato ad Edimburgo e Dave lavora in un megastore della Virgin, dove anche io ho lavorato per quattro o cinque anni. Credo sia molto più facile scrivere di un posto se lo si conosce personamente, perché una città ha un’anima fatta di immagini, suoni e odori che non puoi riconoscere se non ci hai vissuto. Trackman nella sua storia ha un elemento di fantasia, ma è ambientato in un luogo reale e il suo protagonista è un ragazzo empatico (si spera) e credibile, e questo permette al lettore di abbandonare le proprie convinzioni e seguire il viaggio di Dave.
Trackman is your debut novel: I read about the several and original works you did before becoming a writer. Past experiences do play a role in your creative process? Do you think that a writer must somehow “get his hands dirty” so to be more beliavable with his stories?
Trackman is set in Edinburgh and Davie works in Virgin Megastore, which is where I worked myself for four or five years. I think it’s much easier to write about a location if you have a good knowledge of it yourself. A city has sights and sounds and smells that bring it to life that you only know about if you’ve been there. Trackman has a fantasy element running through it but, because it’s grounded in a real place and has (hopefully) an empathetic, believable character at the heart of it, that makes it easier for the reader to suspend belief and go on the journey with Davie.
Ha già in mente qualche idea su un nuovo romanzo? Vuole anticiparci qualcosa?
Ho un’idea che sembra funzionare ma sono alla fase iniziale e non vorrei anticipare nulla. Dopo l’uscita del mio secondo libro, ho avuto due figli e mi sembra di aver perso un po’ il mio ritmo di scrittura. Sebbene l’ urgenza di scrivere si faccia sentire da un anno circa, il problema è cercare di trovare del tempo per farlo adesso. Sono impaziente di far uscire le parole ma ci sto impiegando più tempo del previsto.
Do you already have any idea about a new novel? Can you tell us anything about it?
I have a working idea, but it’s still in the early stages so I don’t want to jinx anything. Since my second novel came out, I’ve had two children and I feel like I lost my writing mojo there for a while. The urge to write has come back in the last year or so though. The only problem is trying to find time now. I’m impatient to get words down but it’s taking me longer than I’d like.
C’è un autore che potrebbe definire il suo preferito? O del quale ha letto molte opere?
Sono sempre stata un lettrice molto avida e ho amato i libri dacché ho ricordi, inoltre ho una laurea in inglese quindi un po’ come per la musica, anche in fatto di gusti lettareari sono molto eclettica. E’ difficile scegliere un autore preferito, ma ho una passione particolare per Stephen King. A scuola vinsi un premio e mi fu dato un buono per acquistare un libro da riportare poi alla premiazione ufficiale. Il giorno dell’evento, tutti avevano comprato testi accademici o enciclopedie, ed io Carrie di Sthephen King. Quello fu l’inizio di un lungo amore per i sui romanzi.
Which Author is your favourite one? Or of which did you read many books?
I’ve always been a really avid reader. I’ve loved books since as long as I can remember and have a degree in English so, like my music, I have very eclectic tastes in reading. It’s hard to pick a favourite author but I do have a particular love for Stephen King. I won a prize when I was at school and was given a book token and told to go away and buy a book and then bring it in for the prize-giving ceremony. When I turned up to the event, everyone else had bought academic textbooks or encyclopedias and I had bought Carrie by Stephen King. That was the start of a lifelong love of his books.
Conosce il thriller nordico? Segue qualche autore in particolare?
So che il genere mi piacerebbero molto perché amo le storie dark, oscure e desolate ed anche le crime novels. Ho letto molti scrittori di galli scozzesi (quello che viene chiamato Tartan noir), come Peter May, Ian Rankin, Allan Guthrie, Doug Johnstone, William McIlvanney, Val McDermid etc etc. Sono rimasta indietro sul versante del thriller nordico sebbene mi incuriosisca molto, ma non saprei da dove iniziare. E’ un po’ come quando ascolti una bella canzone per radio, e poi scopri che la band ha già pubblicato almeno dieci album e tu sei così sopraffatta che non sai quale cercare per primo.
Do you know nordic thriller? Are you following some Authors in particular?
I know it’s something that I would love, as I enjoy dark, bleak, sparse works of fiction and I enjoy crime novels. I read a lot of Scottish crime novellists (tartan noir as it’s called) like Peter May, Ian Rankin, Allan Guthrie, Doug Johnstone, William McIlvanney, Val McDermid etc etc. I’ve been left behind a bit though as the phenomenon of nordic thrillers crept up on me and now I don’t know where to start. It’s a bit like hearing a brilliant song on the radio and then discovering the band in question have released about ten albums already and you’re overwhelmed as to where to begin.
