A tu per tu incontra oggi Karen Dionne, autrice di un thriller psicologico di successo mondiale, vincitore di numerosi premi, La casa del padre. Thrillernord lo ha recensito per voi ed ha avuto il piacere di dialogare con la scrittrice.
Come ti è venuta l’ispirazione per questa storia così particolare?
Mi hanno sempre affascinato le persone che hanno avuto un’infanzia tutt’altro che perfetta, ma che sono riuscite poi a riscattarsi, e credo che inconsciamente, questa mia ammirazione abbia ispirato la storia di Helena. Una notte mi sono svegliata ed avevo ben impresse nella testa, le prime frasi di quello che sarebbe poi diventato La casa del padre: se vi dicessi il nome di mia madre, lo riconoscereste al volo. Era famosa, anche se non avrebbe voluto. Non ha avuto quel genere di notorietà che la gente desidera: la stessa fama di Jaycee Duggard, Amanda Berry, Elizabeth Smart, sebbene mia madre non fosse nessuna di loro”. Non stavo sognando il personaggio, lei era lì e mi stava parlando. Poi durante la mattinata ho scritto alcuni paragrafi con la sua voce narrante che mi raccontava chi fosse, e questa è ora, la prima pagina del libro.
Whatever gave you the inspiration for such a particular story?
I’ve always been fascinated by people who overcome a less-than-perfect childhood to make something of themselves, and I think that subconsciously, this admiration was behind the inspiration for Helena’s story. I actually woke up in the night with the first sentences of what was to become THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER fully formed in my head: If I told you my mother’s name, you’d recognize it right away. My mother was famous, though she never wanted to be. Hers wasn’t the kind of fame anyone would with for: Jaycee Duggard, Amanda Berry, Elizabeth Smart—that kind of fame, though my mother was none of them. I wasn’t dreaming the character, she was just there, talking to me. In the morning, I wrote up a few paragraphs in her voice telling me more about who she was, and this is now the first page of the novel.
Le descrizioni dell’ambientazione sono molto suggestive, quanto ha influito la tua conoscenza del territorio del Michigan e l’aver vissuto immersa nella natura come la protagonista?
Sicuramente aver sperimentato la vita in fattoria, nei boschi, ha avuto un ruolo cruciale per conferire alla storia la sua veste di autenticità. Mentre scrivevo, pensavo spesso che non avrei potuto conoscere così bene alcuni dettagli se non li avessi vissuti. Una cosa interessante da notare è che quando La casa del padre venne recensita sul New York Times, il recensore scrisse che una delle cose che rendeva il romanzo così superbo, era proprio la veridicità delle ambientazioni, aggiungendo che le mie descrizioni “sembravano naturali e prive di forzature, a dimostrazione del fatto che l’autrice si era affidata a fonti ben lontane da Wikipedia”. Potete immaginare che le ricerche per questo romanzo risalgono a circa quarant’ anni fa!
How much did your knowledge of Michigan land and the fact you lived at one with nature such as your protagonist, influence your descriptions of setting, that are very appealing?
The fact that I homesteaded in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with my husband and infant daughter was crucial to the authenticity of the story. I often thought as I was writing that I never would have known a particular detail without having lived it. Interestingly, when THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER was reviewed in The New York Times, the reviewer said that one of the things that makes the novel “so superb” is the authenticity of the setting, adding that my descriptions “seem effortless, plain that [the author’s] fluency has a deeper source than Wikipedia.” I guess you could say I did the research for this novel forty years ago!
Nel libro viene trattato maggiormente il rapporto tra Helena ed il padre lasciando la madre sullo sfondo tanto che non ne viene menzionato neanche il nome, come mai questa scelta?
Ero molto legata a mio padre quando ero piccola, e questa storia mi ha dato la possibilità di analizzare il rapporto padre-figlia in una realtà portata agli estremi. L’amore di Helena per il padre, probabilmente è più puro rispetto a quello che gli altri bambini provano per i propri genitori, perché non ci sono altri adulti nella sua vita: nessun nonno o insegnate, solo l’ombra di una madre, che il padre insegna a disdegnare. Crescendo, tutti i bambini cominciano a vedere i difetti dei proprio genitori, ma nel caso di Helena, che ama suo padre in modo assoluto e incondizionato, scoprire che è un uomo cattivo, avrà un impatto molto più potente.
In your novel you deal more with the relationship between Helena and his father, leaving aside the mother, so much that her name is even not mentioned. What’s the reason of this choice?
I loved my father when I was a child, and this story gave me the chance to explore the father-daughter relationship in a context that was stripped down to the extreme. Helena’s love for her father is quite possibly purer than that of any other child for their parent because there are no other adults in her life; no grandparents, and no teachers—only a shadow of a mother whom her father teaches her to disdain. All children begin to see their parents’ flaws as they grow up, but in Helena’s case, because she loved her father so purely and unconditionally, her realization that her father is a very bad man becomes all the more powerful.
Come è ormai noto dal libro ne verrà tratto un film, ne sei felice? Cosa ne pensi?
Sono molto felice che La casa del padre diventi un film! Le persone coinvolte in questo progetto sono così incredibilmente talentuose, che sono sicura di aver messo la storia di Helena in buone mani, e non vedo l’ora di vedere cosa ne verrà fuori.
It is now known, that your book will turn into a movie, are you happy? What do you think?
I’m very excited that THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER is going to be a movie! The people associated with this project are so incredibly talented, I’m sure Helena’s story is in good hands, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it.
David Kosse, presidente di SXTInternational sostiene che The Marsh King’s Daughter è uno dei thriller maggiormente ipnotici che si possano leggere, un po’ come Millennium – Uomini che odiano le donne o L’amore bugiardo – Gone Girl, sei d’accordo con questa affermazione? Cosa ne pensi del paragone?
Credo che sia un paragone davvero generoso!
David Kosse, SXTInternational’s chairman, says that “The Marsh King’s Daughter” is one of the thrillers more hypnotic one can read, such as “Millennium – The girl with the Dragon tatoo” or “Gone girl”. Do you agree? What do you think about this comparison?
I think this is a very generous comparison!
The Marsh King’s Daughter ha avuto un enorme successo in America ma anche in altri Paesi tanto da essere considerato uno dei migliori romanzi del 2017. Te lo aspettavi questo successo, come lo vivi?
Quando quella notte mi sono svegliata con in mente le prime frasi del libro, sapevo che la storia aveva del potenziale per diventare qualcosa di speciale. Ma tutto quello che è venuto poi, è ben lontano da ciò che mi sarei aspettata, e continuo a vivere in uno stato di perenne stupore.
“The Marsh King’s Daughter” has been enormously successful in the U.S.A., but also in other Countries, so that to be considered one of the best novel of 2017. Were you expecting this success? How do you live it?
When I woke up in the night with the first sentences of THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER in my head, I knew the story had the potential to be something special. But everything that has happened for the book is so far beyond anything I ever imagined, I live in a state of perpetual astonishment.
Conosci il genere thriller nordico? Apprezzi qualche autore in particolare?
Sono una grande ammiratrice di Jo Nesbø. Curiosa coincidenza, il regista che sta sta lavorando per portare La casa del padre sullo schermo, è anche lui norvegese ed ha diretto un film basato su uno dei suoi romanzi.
Do you know nordic thriller genre? Is there some Author you appreciate in particular?
I’m a great admirer of Jo Nesbø’s work. Interestingly, the director who’s bringing THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER to the screen is also Norwegian, and also directed a film based on one of Nesbø’s novels.
