Ti faccio i mei complimenti per L’emulatore che ho apprezzato davvero molto. Come è nata l’idea per questo libro?
Ti ringrazio moltissimo, sei davvero gentile! In realtà il libro nasce da un mix di idee che ho riunito in una storia. In principio volevo scrivere di Londra ma senza parlare di Jack lo Squartatore, nonostante fossi molto appassionata di questa figura: pensavo che molti straordinari scrittori lo avevano già fatto e io non sapevo come aggiungere qualcosa di nuovo. Ma poi accadde che accompagnai mio figlio ad incontrare Babbo Natale nell’ufficio di mio marito, vicino a Tower Hill; eravamo prossimi al Natale del 2015. Dopo l’incontro facemmo una passeggiata nei dintorni fino ad arrivare a St Katharine’s Docks, dove si trova un’incantevole libreria. Come puoi immaginare, sono entrata ed ho acquistato un libro che parlava dei dintorni di Londra. Tornati a casa, mio marito cominciò a leggerlo e all’improvviso esclamò: O mio Dio!!! Non ci puoi credere! Una delle vittime di Jack lo Squartatore era svedese! E aspetta, non è finita! Era di Torslanda, vicinissimo a Falkenberg! (dove si svolgono in parte le mie storie). Non potevo crederci e pensai: questo è un segno, non posso ignorarlo! Perciò decisi di parlare delle vittime dello Squartatore. E così è cominciato tutto.
First of all, congratulations for your novel Keeper, I really appreciate it so much. Where did the idea of this book come from?
Thank you so much! How kind of you! It’s actually a mix of ideas that i just mixed together in a way. First of all, I wanted to write about London but without writing about Jack the Ripper, despite being so passionate about it: I thought that loads of amazing writers had done it already and I didn’t know how to add something new. But what happened was that I took my son to meet Santa Claus at my husband’s office close to Tower Hill; it was close to Christmas 2015. Afterwards, we went walking around and ended up in St Katharine’s Docks, where there was such a lovely bookshop. As you can imagine, I got in and bought a book about that London neighbourhood. When we got home, my husband started reading it and suddenly he said: Oh my god!!! You are not gonna believe this! One of the victims of Jack the Ripper was Swedish! And wait, that’s not it! She was from Torslanda, very close to Falkenberg! (where my stories partly take place). I couldn’t believe and I thought: I cannot ignore that: it’s a sign! So I decided to talk about the victims of the Ripper. And that’s how all started!
Ne L’emulatore le vicende si snodano su due archi temporali e due scenari differenti: alla fine dell’Ottocento a Londra e nel 2015 in Svezia come mai questa scelta?
Amo l’idea di offrire ai miei lettori due storie in una ed anche trattare di Storia ed intrattenimento allo stesso tempo. Adoro creare un caso puzzle da risolvere , portarlo nella Storia, rendere difficile scoprirne la soluzione! Ora sto scrivendo il mio terzo libro, che si svilupperà su tre linee temporali: la Spagna degli anni 40, durante il regime franchista, poi negli anni 90 ed infine ai giorni nostri, in Svezia!
Why did you choose to develop events in Keeper on two time spans and two different settings: London late nineteenth century and Sweden 2015?
I love the idea of offering to my readership two stories into one and also learn about History and entertain them at the same time. And I absolutely love creating a puzzling case for you to resolve, and bringing in History, make it harder to guess! I’m actually writing my Third book, which will be on three timelines: Spain in the forties, during the Franco dictatorship, Then in the 1990ies and nowadays, in Sweden!
Nei tuoi libri la presenza femminile è più incisiva rispetto a quella maschile e i personaggi femminili come Emily Roy, Alexis Castells e Karla Hansen sono maggiormente delineati a cosa è dovuta questa scelta?
Hahaha! Me lo hanno detto, sì! Non mi ero accorta di aver dato così tanta forza alle mie donne! Probabilmente nel profondo sono molto più femminista di quello che credo! Scherzi a parte, ho volute davvero personaggi femminili forti, perchè penso non ce ne siano abbastanza nella letteratura gialla moderna. Per una volta, le donne sono sedute al posto di guida.
In your books female characters such as Emily Roy, Alexis Castells and Karla Hansen are more outlined and effective in comparison to male ones. Why this choice?
Hahaha! I have been told so, yes! I didn’t realise I was empowering my women this much! I guess deep down I am more of a feminist than I thought! Jokes aside, I really wanted to have strong female characters as I thought we didn’t meet enough in modern crime literature. For once, they are in the driver seat!
Ne L’emulatore le vicende narrate hanno radici nei legami famigliari più o meno lontani. Credi che la famiglia abbia un forte impatto nella costruzione della personalità di un individuo e nella nascita di un eventuale patologia mentale e/o disturbo di personalità?
Credo molto di più nel nutrire che nella natura. Penso che famiglia, ambiente ed educazione possano forgiare la natura. Ne sono assolutamente convinta. Penso che i serial killers diventino tali non a causa del loro DNA, ma per via di trauma, relazioni famigliari deleterie o esperienze tali.
In Keeper, the events you told found their roots in more or less far family ties. Do you believe that family might have a deep impact in building the personality of the individual or in the birth of a possible mental illness and/or personality disorder?
I really believe in nurture more than in nature. I think that family, environment and education can bend nature, I absolutely do. I think that serial killers become evil not because of their DNA, but because of traumas and damaging parents or experiences.
Ci sono autori che ti hanno ispirata e che continuano a farlo nella tua carriera di scrittrice?
Sono una fan sfegatata di Agatha Christie. Ho cominciato a leggerla all’età di 7 anni e ancora oggi rileggo i suoi fantastici libri! Lei è un motivatore giornaliero, una continua fonte di ispirazione per me. Tengo sempre sulla mia scrivania uno dei suoi romanzi, adesso ad esempio ho L’assassinio di Roger Ackroyd, ed anche un volume di citazioni di frasi di Hercule Poirot.
Are there Authors that inspired you and continue to do so in your writer’s career?
I am an absolute fan of Agatha Christie. I started reading her when I was 7 and I am still now re-reading her fantastic books! She is a daily motivator, she is such an inspiration to me. I always keep on my desk on of her books, now it’s the murder of Roger Ackroyd, and also one about Hercule Poirot’s quotes.
Hai lavorato come giornalista per la stampa francese e la televisione, ora ti dedichi “solo” alla scrittura? E come mai hai deciso di intraprendere la carriera di scrittrice?
Si, sono molto fortunata a questo riguardo; dal momento che i miei libri vanno molto bene, posso focalizzarmi sulla mia carriera di scrittrice. E’ talmente soddisfacente scrivere gialli, provare ad entrare nella mente dei killers e di coloro che danno loro la caccia. Analizzare, creare piste, false piste, collegarle. Immergersi nella Storia e, ovviamente, passare il tempo con le mie ragazze preferite: Emily, Alexis e Aliénor. Che banda, vero?
You worked as journalist for French press and tv; now do you “just” pursue your writing? Why did you choose to go into writer’s career?
Yes, I’m very lucky on that respect: as the books did very well, I can focus on my writing career. It’s such a fulfilling thing to write crime stories, to get into the killer’s mind and the hunter’s. To analyse, create trails, false trails, to link it all. To dive into History and, of course, to spend time with my favourite girls: Emily, Alexis and Aliénor. What a gang, right?
Che ne pensi degli autori nordici? Hai mai letto thriller nordici?
Il primo autore che ho letto è stato Henning Mankell, che davvero mi ha trasportato nella Svezia che conosco (all’epoca non stavo ancora assieme al mio marito svedese, hahaha!) poi sono seguiti Stieg Larsson e Camilla Läckberg, amo entrambi moltissimo. Attualmente uno dei miei preferiti è norvegese, si tratta di Thomas Enger. Sta crescendo sempre di più e spero davvero che possiate leggere la serie di Henning Jul: davvero favolosa.
What do you think about nordic Authors? Did you ever read nordic thriller
The first author I started reading was Henning Mankell, which really transported me to the Sweden I got to know (at the time, I was not with my Swedish husband yet hahaha!) then followed Stieg Larsson and Camilla Läckberg, who I really love both. One of my favourites right now is Norwegian and is name is Thomas Enger. He is getting bigger and bigger and I really hope you’ll be able to read his Henning Jul series: it’s absolutely fabulous!
