Your first psychological thriller One in three that I had the pleasure of reading, has been published in Italy. How does the writing of a thriller novel change from a sentimental one?
My earlier books had romantic elements, certainly, but they also had dark sides, too. As my writing developed, I found myself drawn to these darker elements more and more: it’s the fine line between ‘normal’ behaviour and the extreme that I find so fascinating. If a man sees a beautiful girl in a cafe and comes there every day until he sees her again, is that romantic — or stalking? I didn’t really choose to write in a different genre: it was just a natural progression from my darker women’s fiction to domestic noir thrillers, and I really feel I’m where I’m meant to be right now. My books have always been tightly plotted, so that hasn’t changed, but I think readers are more demanding: they’ve read so many of these books that they’re quite sophisticated, and used to ‘normal’ twists. It takes a lot more to surprise them, so you have to really think things through!
È uscito in Italia il tuo primo thriller psicologico Ex moglie che ho avuto il piacere di leggere. Come cambia la scrittura di un romanzo thriller da quella sentimentale?
I miei libri precedenti avevano certamente elementi romantici, ma avevano anche lati oscuri. Man mano che la mia scrittura si sviluppava, mi sono trovata sempre più attratta da questi elementi più oscuri: è la linea sottile tra il comportamento “normale” e l’estremo che trovo così affascinante. Se un uomo vede una bella ragazza in un bar e viene lì ogni giorno finché non la vede di nuovo, è romantico o stalking? Non ho davvero scelto di scrivere in un genere diverso: è stata solo una naturale progressione dalla mia narrativa femminile più oscura ai thriller noir domestici, e sento davvero di essere dove dovrei essere in questo momento. I miei libri sono sempre stati ben strutturati, quindi le cose non sono cambiate, ma penso che i lettori siano più esigenti: hanno letto così tanti di questi libri che sono piuttosto sofisticati e sono abituati a colpi di scena “normali”. Ci vuole molto di più per sorprenderli, quindi devi pensare davvero ad ogni implicazione!
Your characters are also well-characterized from an emotional point of view and this emphasizes the pathos with the reader. Which was the most difficult protagonist to delineate and which is your favorite?
At times, I sympathised with both women. I was a naive 23-year-old when I met my first husband, who was still married to his previous wife, although they were living apart – he told me they were divorced, and foolishly I believed him. Later, when he left me, I learned he told the same story to the next wife. So I have been Louise and Caz, and I understand them both. Whenever I was writing each of their stories, I was on their side, which is probably why the reader also feels tugged in both directions. I think Andrew was the hardest to sympathise with because he’s so narcissistic. But the most difficult to write was probably Bella, simply because it’s so hard to capture the mind of a teenager.
I tuoi personaggi sono anche ben caratterizzati dal punto di vista emotivo e questo enfatizza il pathos con il lettore. Qual è stato il protagonista più difficile da delineare e qual è il tuo preferito?
A volte, simpatizzavo con entrambe le donne. Ero una ingenua ragazza di 23 anni quando ho incontrato il mio primo marito, che era ancora sposato con la sua precedente moglie, anche se vivevano separati – mi ha detto che erano divorziati, e stupidamente gli ho creduto. Più tardi, quando mi lasciò, seppi che aveva raccontato la stessa storia alla moglie successiva. Quindi sono stata Louise e Caz, e le capisco entrambe. Ogni volta che scrivevo ciascuna delle loro storie, ero dalla loro parte, motivo per cui anche il lettore si sente tirato in entrambe le direzioni. Penso che Andrew sia stato il più difficile con cui simpatizzare perché è così narcisista. Ma il personaggio più difficile da scrivere è stata probabilmente Bella, semplicemente perché è così difficile catturare la mente di un adolescente.

Enlarged families are always a source of inspiration for various genres of novels. Are there any real facts that inspired you?
See the answer above! As they say: if life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Of course I drew on my personal experience of divorce and love triangles for this story, but I don’t know many women who haven’t experienced this kind of domestic rivalry from one angle or the other.
Le famiglie allargate sono sempre fonte di ispirazione per romanzi di vario genere. Ci sono fatti reali che ti hanno ispirato?
Vedi la risposta sopra! Come si suol dire: se la vita ti dà dei limoni, fai una limonata. Ovviamente ho attinto alla mia esperienza personale di divorzio e triangoli amorosi per questa storia, ma non conosco molte donne che non abbiano sperimentato questo tipo di rivalità domestica da un lato o dall’altro.

Absolutely! I really feel comfortable in this trend. I’ve just finished my next psychological thriller, ‘Stolen, ’ which is the story of a perfect wedding day that ends in tragedy when a three-year-old bridesmaid vanishes from an idyllic beach wedding. The hunt for Lottie quickly becomes a world-wide search, but it’s not long before suspicion falls on her mother, Alex. Who took Lottie Martini? And will she ever come home? Lottie’s father, Luca, is Italian, by the way, and part of the book is set in Genoa and Sicily!
I tuoi prossimi progetti manterranno questa tendenza? Sarei davvero entusiasta nel caso….
Assolutamente! Mi sento davvero a mio agio in questa tendenza. Ho appena finito il mio prossimo thriller psicologico, “Stolen”, che è la storia di un matrimonio perfetto che finisce in tragedia quando una damigella d’onore di tre anni scompare da un matrimonio idilliaco sulla spiaggia. La caccia a Lottie diventa rapidamente una ricerca mondiale, ma non passa molto tempo prima che i sospetti cadano su sua madre, Alex. Chi ha preso Lottie Martini? Tornerà mai a casa? Il padre di Lottie, Luca, è italiano, tra l’altro, e parte del libro è ambientato a Genova e in Sicilia!
The essential novels to be read for a true reader?
There’s so much snobbery when it comes to reading, but I think there’s room for so many different types of storytelling. I think the books that truly transport you to a different world and make characters come alive are the only ‘essential’ books you need to read. But if I had to recommend some, of course I’d say start with Tess Stimson!
I romanzi fondamentali da leggere per un vero lettore?
C’è così tanto snobismo quando si tratta di leggere, ma penso che ci sia spazio per tanti diversi tipi di narrazione. Penso che i libri che ti trasportano veramente in un mondo diverso e che danno vita ai personaggi siano gli unici libri “essenziali” che devi leggere. Ma se dovessi consigliarne qualcuno, ovviamente direi di iniziare con Tess Stimson!
Hoping that the vaccines and the decrease of diseases will give back us our lost freedom, is there any possibility meeting you for a presentation in Italy?
I hope so! I love Italy — I lived in Rome for four years, and my eldest son was born when we lived there. I would move back in a heartbeat, but my husband’s job keeps us in the US, and our children have grown up and made their homes here. But I visit as often as possible, and for me it is a dream come true to be published in Italian. I can’t wait to come back!
Sperando che i vaccini e la diminuzione delle malattie ci restituiscano la libertà perduta, c’è qualche possibilità di incontrarti per una presentazione in Italia?
Lo spero! Amo l’Italia — ho vissuto a Roma per quattro anni e il mio figlio maggiore è nato quando vivevamo lì. Ritornerei in un baleno, ma il lavoro di mio marito ci tiene negli Stati Uniti e i nostri figli sono cresciuti e hanno fatto la loro casa qui. Ma li visito il più spesso possibile, e per me è un sogno che si avvera essere pubblicata in italiano. Non vedo l’ora di tornare!
