How was this thriller with The Wives born?
I have always been really interested in polygamy. This particular storyline, I was at a concert and the artist sang a line about loving two people at once and it just kind of fell into my head. I wanted to explore the emotions behind polygamy and some of the fallout from it.
Come è nato questo tuo thriller, “Tre mogli”?
Sono sempre stato molto interessata alla poligamia. Relativamente a questa trama in particolare, ero a un concerto e l’artista ha cantato una frase sull’amore di due persone contemporaneamente e mi è semplicemente venuta in mente. Volevo esplorare le emozioni dietro la poligamia e alcune delle sue conseguenze.
In some communities polygamy is legal, the best know eachother and collaborate with each other. In a selfish society like ours, the modern and digital one, how long would such bonds last?
It would depend on the women for sure. Can you imagine sharing the love of your life with another woman, much less multiple women? It would take a special kind of woman to be able to do that or you would go crazy. The latter would happen to me.
In alcune comunità la poligamia è legale, i migliori si conoscono e collaborano tra loro. In una società egoista come la nostra, quella moderna e digitale, quanto dureranno tali legami?
Di sicuro dipenderà dalle donne. Riesci a immaginare di condividere l’amore della tua vita con un’altra donna, tanto meno con più donne? Ci vorrebbe un tipo speciale di donna per farlo o diventeresti matta. Quest’ultima cosa sarebbe successa a me.
The Wives is a psychological thriller about family and the bonds that form between secrets and lies we tell to others and to ourselves. Did you start from a particular character or from the story itself to create this novel?
The story came to me first then the women started talking and I started writing their story. Each woman represents something different. One represents bitterness, another willful ignorance and finally insecurity. I had to channel those traits to write this book.
Tre mogli è un thriller psicologico sulla famiglia e sui legami che si formano tra i segreti e le bugie che raccontiamo agli altri e a noi stessi. Sei partita da un personaggio in particolare o dalla storia stessa per creare questo romanzo?
La storia è venuta per prima, poi le donne hanno iniziato a parlare e io ho iniziato a scrivere la loro storia. Ogni donna rappresenta qualcosa di diverso. Uno rappresenta l’amarezza, un’ altra l’ignoranza intenzionale e infine l’insicurezza. Ho dovuto incanalare quei tratti per scrivere questo libro.
Writing is an intimate and personal process, do you have any ritual or background music that accompanies you while you write?
I like to write where my stories take place. When I lived in Florida, my stories took place there. Now I am in Washington so The Wives takes place there. Seattle is moody, dark, and gloomy, a perfect setting for this book. I had fun traveling to all of the places Thursday goes in the book and writing there. I also have a Spotify playlist for each book and I listen to music while writing.
La scrittura è un processo intimo e personale, hai qualche rito o musica di sottofondo che ti accompagna mentre scrivi?
Mi piace scrivere dove si svolgono le mie storie. Quando vivevo in Florida, le mie storie si svolgevano lì. Ora sono a Washington, quindi Tre mogli si svolge lì. Seattle è lunatica, oscura e cupa, un’ambientazione perfetta per questo libro. Misono divertita a viaggiare in tutti i posti in cui una delle protagoniste va nel libro e a scrivere lì. Ho anche una playlist Spotify per ogni libro e ascolto musica mentre scrivo.
Who are the most inspiring authors for you? Please, recommend us three titles that cannot be missing in a personal library.
The most inspiring authors for me are Gillian Flynn and Stephen King. Both have taught me so much about writing and storytelling. Three titles that can’t be missed are Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, Lisey’s Story by Stephen King and The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons

What kind of upcoming projects are you oriented towards?
I released The Wrong Family this year and will be releasing An Honest Lie in 2022.
