In your novel “MARATHON, just published in Italy (April, the 10th), Jonathan Stride comes back, a character beloved by your readers. Is there something of you, in Stride? Something of you that you can see reflected in him?
It always warms my heart to see how much readers love Jonathan Stride. I think it is because he is not a super-hero. He’s a real man with strengths and weaknesses, and readers can appreciate that. He doesn’t always make the right decisions, but he is honourable and passionate about finding the truth and helping the people in his life. This is also a particularly dramatic, emotional book for him. There is something of me in all of my characters (does that scare you?), but Stride has really become his own man over the years. I think of him as one of my best friends, rather than as any kind of reflection of me. Like my readers, I am deeply attached to him and the characters around him, and I cry when they struggle through difficult times.
Mi fa sempre piacere vedere quanti lettori amano Jonathan Stride. Penso che sia perché lui non è un supereroe. È un uomo vero con le sue debolezze e I suoi punti di forza, i lettori apprezzano questo. Non prende sempre le decisioni giuste, ma è fedele ai suoi valori e non si arrende nella ricerca della verità e nell’aiutare le persone. Quella raccontata in questo libro è una storia piuttosto drammatica, emotivamente intensa per lui. C’è qualcosa di me in tutti i miei personaggi (questo vi spaventa?), ma Stride è diventato negli anni un uomo con una sua propria esistenza. Io penso a lui più come a uno dei miei migliori amici che come a un personaggio in cui mi rispecchio. Come i miei lettori, anche io sono profondamente affezionato a lui e ai personaggi che gli ruotano intorno, e soffro quando vivono momenti difficili.
“MARATHON” begins with a bombing, a current and delicate issue. What do you think about racial hatred, religious extremism and their consequences in our lives?
This was a very difficult novel to write, because it touches on so many issues that we face in real life. It may be an emotional and challenging novel for readers, too, but I hope they will all stay with me to the healing conclusion at the end. I didn’t want to shy away from the hatred and extremism in our world, and I wanted to show how it can poison everyone and lead to tragic results in ways that we can’t anticipate. However, I also wanted to show that we can overcome hatred and come together in forgiveness and understanding. For me, this is an important book, and I hope readers agree.
E’ stato un romanzo difficile da scrivere, proprio perché tocca tanti aspetti che ci troviamo ad affrontare nella vita reale. Anche per i lettori dovrebbe essere un romanzo emozionante e sfidante, ma spero che staranno con me fino al finale riconciliante che chiude il libro. Non volevo prendere le distanze dalle questioni dell’odio e del razzismo che ci circondano, anzi ho voluto mostrare come essi possano riuscire ad avvelenare chiunque portando ad esiti tragici in modi che non possiamo prevedere. Ho voluto però anche far riflettere sulla possibilità di vincere l’odio e ritrovarci nel perdono e nella comprensione. Per me questo è un libro importante, spero che questo si avverta leggendo il romanzo.
A very important subject in your novel is ‘misunderstanding’. Do you think we are all victims of this? As we might find more and more difficult to choose between right and wrong beyond our personal beliefs.
Yes, it is so easy to leap to the wrong conclusions about people, and I think social media has made it worse. Much of social media has become an echo chamber that promotes outrage and “group think.” We believe what we want to believe, and social media reinforces our perceptions, even when they’re wrong or short-sighted. That’s especially true in the aftermath of tragic events. Information spreads lightning fast – but so does misinformation. What starts out as news quickly becomes an online breeding-ground for rumor and speculation that can spin out of control. Because of this problem, I chose to make social media a “character” in this book. Twitter plays a big role in how news spreads in MARATHON – but the results are disastrous for an ordinary man and his family. I think this particular theme of the book could play out all too easily in real life.
Sì, è molto facile saltare alle conclusioni sbagliate sulle persone e credo che i social media abbiano peggiorato le cose. Gran parte dei social fa da cassa di risonanza nel promuovere le offese e le “correnti di pensiero”. Crediamo quello che vogliamo credere, e i social rafforzano le nostre credenze, anche quando sono sbagliate o miopi. Questo vale soprattutto nei momenti successivi agli eventi tragici. Le informazioni si diffondono alla velocità della luce – ma così anche la disinformazione. Quello che nasce come una notizia diventa presto terreno fertile online per chiacchiere e gossip inutili che possono facilmente sfuggire al nostro controllo. Per questo ho deciso di fare dei social media un “personaggio” del romanzo. Ne IL GIORNO PIU’ BUIO Twitter ha un ruolo molto importante per come le notizie si diffondono – ma le conseguenze si rivelano disastrose per un uomo e per la sua famiglia. Penso che questo tema in particolare si potrebbe facilmente ritrovare nella vita reale.
Did a real person inspire you for the character of Dawn Basch, and the profound hate she carries?
Dawn Basch is a very insidious character, because there are parts of her philosophy that are seductively logical. Even Stride and the people around him find themselves acknowledging that part of what she says is correct. However, she cruelly and recklessly takes her philosophy to dangerous extremes. I didn’t base her character on any specific individual in real life. That’s because I wanted readers to realize that all of us can find a little Dawn Basch in our souls. It’s natural. It’s human. The key is how we rise above it.
Dawn Basch è un personaggio insidioso, perché per alcuni aspetti la sua razionalità è seduttiva. Anche Stride e le persone intorno a lui riconoscono che parte di quello che Dawn dice è corretto. Nonostante questo lei porta sconsideratamente all’estremo il suo pensiero, fino a conseguenze crudeli e pericolose. Non mi sono ispirato a qualcuno in particolare per il suo personaggio. Questo perché volevo che i lettori potessero vedere come in ognuno di noi possa trovarsi un po’ di Dawn Basch. È naturale. È umano. Il punto è come riusciamo a superarlo.
Where does the idea of this novel come from? Was there a particular event that brought you to develop a plot close to our current reality?
Yes, the initial inspiration for this book was the marathon bombing in Boston. The marathon is such an important part of the identity of the city of Boston, and that is true in Duluth, too, which hosts its own marathon every year and draws runners from around the world. So I knew that something like this needed to become part of Jonathan Stride’s world. But I don’t write terrorism thrillers or political thrillers. I write psychological stories where the drama emerges out of the struggle and emotions of ordinary people. That’s what I tried to do in this book – to take all of these difficult issues and bring them to a level that resonates for us as men, women, husbands, wives, parents, and children.
Sì, l’ispirazione iniziale per questo libro è stata la bomba alla maratona di Boston. La maratona è un momento molto importante per l’identità della città di Boston, e vale lo stesso per Duluth, dove ogni anno c’è una maratona che raccoglie partecipanti alla corsa da tutto il mondo. Così ho pensato che un evento simile dovesse essere parte del mondo di Jonathan Stride. Io non scrivo però thriller di genere politico o incentrati su eventi terroristici. Scrivo storie più psicologiche dove il dramma nasce dalle tensioni e dalle emozioni dei personaggi. È quello che ho cercato di fare con questo libro – prendere tutti questi argomenti difficili e usarli in modo da far loro toccare le nostre corde, in quanto uomini, donne, mariti, mogli, genitori e figli.
