In the stories of this book you play a lot with men’s fears, in this case we talk about paternity; how do you see yourself as a father?
My father left when I was 8, so when I write about fathers, or think of myself in that role, I tend to be very critical of them, even though he and I have a good relationship now. I don’t have kids of my own, so, just like my own childhood, I have to depend mostly on imagination when it comes to matters of fatherhood.
Nei racconti di questo libro si gioca molto con le paure degli uomini, in questo caso si parla di paternità; come ti vedi come padre?
Mio padre se n’è andato quando avevo 8 anni, quindi quando scrivo di padri, o penso a me stesso in quel ruolo, tendo a essere molto critico nei loro confronti, anche se io e lui abbiamo un buon rapporto ora. Non ho figli miei, quindi, proprio come la mia infanzia, devo dipendere principalmente dall’immaginazione quando si tratta di questioni di paternità.
A very famous Italian director, Dario Argento, has repeatedly stated that he directs horror movies to “exorcise” his fears; what kind of relationship do you have with your works?
Definitely the same. I write as a way to work through everything. It’s like an autopsy for the darkness in my soul. Horror is the best genre for exploring the things that haunt you.
Un famosissimo regista italiano, Dario Argento, ha più volte affermato di dirigere film horror per “esorcizzare” le sue paure; che rapporto hai con le tue opere?
Decisamente lo stesso. Scrivere è per me un modo per elaborare tutto. È come un’autopsia per l’oscurità nella mia anima. L’horror è il miglior genere per esplorare le cose che ti perseguitano.
You have inherited your passion for the Horror genre from your mother. Did you ask her for advice during the writing process?
No, she gave me the tools and encouragement, but after that, I was on my own. I do send her my books when they’re published, though, and she reads every one of them, even though she prefers mystery and historical novels now! If I took her advice today, she’d have me writing Agatha Christie-style whodunnits!
Hai ereditato la tua passione per il genere horror da tua madre. Le hai chiesto consiglio durante il processo di scrittura?
No, mi ha dato gli strumenti e l’incoraggiamento, ma dopo sono rimasto da solo. Le mando i miei libri quando vengono pubblicati, però, e lei li legge tutti, anche se ora preferisce i romanzi gialli e storici! Se oggi seguissi il suo consiglio, mi farebbe scrivere dei gialli in stile Agatha Christie!
Should you be forced to choose another literary genre, which one would you choose?
Crime noir, I think, because it often hews very close to horror in terms of style and subject matter, but largely eschews the supernatural, and I’d be fine with that. That said, I’d also like to write a great Western someday, or a straight drama, or a good old-fashioned mystery. I’m not opposed to writing in any other genre, but a lot of them (like sci-fi) intimidate me, and I assume, are for smarter writers than I can currently claim to be.
Se dovessi essere costretto a scegliere un altro genere letterario, quale sceglieresti?
Noir, credo, perché spesso si avvicina molto all’horror in termini di stile e soggetto, ma evita in gran parte il soprannaturale, e mi starebbe bene. Detto questo, mi piacerebbe anche scrivere un grande western un giorno, o un dramma, o un buon giallo vecchio stile. Non sono contrario a scrivere in nessun altro genere, ma molti di loro (come la fantascienza) mi intimidiscono, e presumo, sono per scrittori più intelligenti di quanto io possa attualmente affermare di essere.
At the end of the book you say you did a lot of different jobs in your life. Which one of them did you enjoy the most?
I very much enjoyed being a fraud investigator because every case was a puzzle and involved elements of detective work. Quite often the cases were exciting, and I developed a good nose for deception. The hours were hostile though and it eventually wore me down. I also didn’t write very much during that period of my life and that always depresses me.
Alla fine del libro dici di aver fatto molti lavori diversi nella tua vita. Quale ti è piaciuto di più?
Mi è piaciuto molto essere un investigatore di frodi perché ogni caso era un enigma e coinvolgeva elementi del lavoro investigativo. Molto spesso i casi erano eccitanti e sviluppai un buon fiuto per l’inganno. Le ore erano dure però e alla fine mi ha stancato. Inoltre non ho scritto molto in quel periodo della mia vita e questo mi deprime sempre.
Given the name of our blog I must ask you this question: do you like Nordic thrillers? Any author in particular?
I have, like most people, read Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo, but that’s about the limit of my exposure to Nordic noir. I very much enjoy it though, mostly because of the mood and chilly atmosphere, which, coming from Europe myself, appeals to me a great deal.
Visto il nome del nostro blog devo farti questa domanda: ti piacciono i thriller nordici? Qualche autore in particolare?
Come la maggior parte delle persone, ho letto Stieg Larsson e Jo Nesbo, ma questo è il limite della mia esposizione al noir nordico. Mi piace molto però, soprattutto per l’atmosfera gelida, che, venendo anch’io dall’Europa, mi attira molto.
