Il rabbino e il commissario. Non uccidere (titolo originale: Der Rabbi und der Kommissar. Du sollst nicht Morden) è il primo romanzo di una serie e, al momento, è l’unico tradotto in italiano. Perché un rabbino detective?
Non ho inventato il Rabbi-Thriller. Prima del mio, ci sono stati alcuni rabbini con la funzione di investigatore privato. Ma in considerazione del dilagare dell’antisemitismo un po’ ovunque, ho ritenuto opportuno creare un detective ebreo che affrontasse i conflitti attuali e che dicesse al lettore: guarda qui, questo è un ebreo – come te e me.
Der Rabbi und der Kommissar. Du sollst nicht Morden is the first novel of a series and, currently, the only one translated into italian. Why did you pick a rabbi as a detective?
I did not invent the Rabbi-Thriller. There were a few Rabbis as private eyes earlier. But in times of an increasing Anti-semitism all over, it was obvious to create a Jewish detective to face the current conflicts and to show to the reader: look here, that’s Jewish – like you and me.
Mi ha colpita la tua descrizione della comunità ebraica e il rendermi conto di quanto poco la conoscessi realmente. Cosa vuol dire essere ebreo oggi?
Significa alzarsi ogni mattina e ascoltare le notizie e chiedere a se stessi: è una notizia buona o cattiva per gli ebrei?
I was impressed by your description of the jewish community, which made me realise how little I actually knew about it. What does it mean to be jewish, in today’s world?
It mean to me getting up every morning and listen to the news and to ask myself: is it good for Jews or bad for Jews?
Nella recensione che ho fatto al tuo romanzo, l’ho definito un cozy crime. Sei d’accordo con me o rifuggi le etichette?
Se lo confrontiamo con il crime scandinavo, il mio è sicuramente un cozy crime. Ho voluto scrivere una storia che mi sarebbe piaciuto leggere. Senza sangue e detective che sono più psicopatici dei killer.
In my review of your book I described it as a “cozy crime” novel. Do you agree with my definition or would you rather not label it?
Compared to the Scandinavian kind of crime stories, it is indeed cozy crime. I wanted to write a story I would like to read myself. Without blood and detectives who are more psychopathic than the killers.
Vieni dal cinema. In che modo quel mondo influisce sul tuo modo di creare storie e trasporle su carta?
Io sono tuttora uno sceneggiatore. Il mio stile è minimalista e ricco di dialoghi.
You come from a background in cinema. How does that world influence your way of creating stories and putting them on paper?
I am still a screenwriter. My style is after all minimalistic and full of dialogues.
So che il sequel di questo primo romanzo è in corso di traduzione in Italia. Continuerai sulla strada del giallo o hai in mente di sperimentare nuovi percorsi?
Ho appena ultimato il terzo episodio e il rabbino Henry Silberbaum sta per tornare.
I know that the sequel of this novel is currently being translated in Italy. Do you plan to keep writing mystery novels or would you like to experiment with different genres?
I have just finished the third part and Rabbi Henry Silberbaum will still go on.
