Hanna, the main character of your first novel is a young journalist called Solveig who’s chasing the scoop of her life. Considering that you are a journalist too, is there any autobiographical element in the book?
There is for sure. Solveig and I grew up in the same neighbourhood in Stockholm, to start with. And like me, she doesn’t always take the right decisions but rather acts in the moment. She is also a bit restless, in search for something she is not always aware of. Even though we have a lot in common there’s more things that differs us. Solveig is a bit younger than me. And a bit more daring and immoral than I am. At least after having kids and a family. Actually, I’m more like her mother or older sister, shaking my head like no, don’t go there, don’t do it!
Hanna, il tuo romanzo d’esordio ha come protagonista Solveig Berg, una giornalista che rincorre lo scoop della vita. Tu fai lo stesso suo mestiere, per caso esiste qualche elemento autobiografico?
Si, c’è sicuramente. Tanto per cominciare, io e Solveig siamo cresciute nello stesso quartiere di Stoccolma. E, come me, non sempre prende le giuste decisioni.. Piuttosto agisce d’istinto. E’ anche un po’ irrequieta, sempre in cerca di quel qualcosa che non conosce nemmeno lei. Sebbene abbiamo molto in comune, ci sono comunque parecchie cose che ci differenziano. Solveig è un po’ più giovane di me. E un pò più audace e immorale. Almeno dopo aver messo su famiglia. In realtà sono un pò più come una madre o una sorella maggiore per lei, scuotendo la testa come per dire “no, non andare lì, non fare questo, non fare quello..!”.
The characters have some interesting and peculiar traits, in particular those of the jet-set. Did you choose this kind of “world” to set your novel for a technical reason?
I was working on a TV-documentary about Swedish glamour models. This was some years ago, when men’s mags and reality shows were really popular. I was fascinated with this world with its glossy facade and but also with its dark sides. Drugs, money and sex. For various reasons we decided not to run the story, but I couldn’t let go of it. It stayed in my head.I suddenly realized that it was a perfect setting for a thriller. After that moment the characters came to life almost by themselves. They demanded me to sit down and write their story, and it turned out nothing like the TV-doc I first had in mind.
I protagonisti hanno delle caratteristiche molto interessanti e particolari.. soprattutto quelli appartenenti al cosiddetto jet-set. Hai utilizzato questo “mondo” per un qualche motivo tecnico?
Qualche anno fa, quando le riviste per uomini e i reality shows erano molto popolari, stavo lavorando ad un documentario per la televisione sulle modelle Svedesi. Ero affascinata da questo mondo all’apparenza luccicante ma dai molti lati oscuri. Droghe, denaro, sesso. Per varie ragioni abbiamo deciso di non mandare in onda questo documentario, ma non potevo abbandonare tutto così. E’ rimasto tutto nella mia testa. All’improvviso mi sono resa conto che sarebbe stato il “setting” perfetto per un thriller. Da quel momento i personaggi si sono creati quasi da soli. Mi hanno chiesto di sedermi e scrivere la loro storia, e il tutto si è trasformato in qualcosa di completamente differente dal documentario che avevo in mente all’inizio.

In my opinion, the title hits the nail on the head. It is impossible not to connect it with L.A. Confidential. “Stockholm Confidential” has been a sudden choice or a more thoughtful one?
I had another working title for a long time, Glam. Only weeks before publishing I sat in a bar with an Aperol cocktail, it was the sort of bar that appears in my book, when the title Stockholm Confidential came to me. It almost knocked me down from the chair. In that second I knew. This is the title. This is the essence of my story. I like the way it sound, and love how it connects to L.A Confidential. James Ellroy is certainly an inspiration.
Il titolo mi ha colpito molto positivamente. Impossibile non pensare al collegamento con L.A. Confidential. Ti è venuto in mente subito questo titolo o è stata una scelta più ponderata?
Per molto tempo ho avuto in mente un altro titolo, Glam. Soltanto alcune settimane prima della pubblicazione ero seduta in un bar con davanti un cocktail Aperol.. Era il tipo di locale che trovate nel mio libro. Tutto d’un tratto il titolo “Stockholm confidential” si è fiondato nella mia mente. Mi ha quasi fatto cadere dalla sedia. In quell’ esatto momento mi sono resa conto che quello era IL titolo. Quello è l’essenza della mia storia. Mi piace come suona, e adoro il collegamento con L.A. Confidential. James Ellroy è sicuramente un’ispirazione.
Just imagine a movie based on your novel. In your opinion, which actress would perform at best the role of Solveig?
This is one of my biggest dreams and I have put some thought to it. I can really see Norwegian actress Josefine Frida Pettersen from the TV-series Skam in the role. She is fantastic, she would be perfect as Solveig. So would American actress Kate Bosworth.
Adesso immagina un film tratto dal tuo libro.. secondo te quale attrice potrebbe interpretare alla perfezione il ruolo di Solveig?
Questo è uno dei miei sogni più grandi e ci ho fatto qualche pensierino. Vedrei bene l’attrice norvegese Josefine Frida Pettersen della serie tv Skam. È fantastica, sarebbe perfetta per il ruolo di Solveig. Come lo sarebbe anche l’attrice americana Kate Bosworth.
How would you describe your book using just 3 words?
Contemporary, gripping, different.
Come definiresti in tre parole il tuo romanzo?
Contemporaneo, avvincente, diverso.
Will we read about Solveig Berg again?
Absolutely! She’s will be back in September when the follow-up is released. It looks like life has finally fallen into place for her. The highly respected journalist Vanja Stridh has recruited Solveig and together they investigate the dirty business behind the facades of Stockholm’s finest restaurants. But everything changes in a moment. Vanja is brutally shot down on the annual Gold Chef Gala and Solveig has to embark on a dangerous search for the truth.
Rivedremo Solveig Berg?
Assolutamente si! Ritornerà a settembre quando verrà pubblicato il seguito. La vita di Solveig sembra aver preso finalmente la piega giusta: l’importante giornalista Vanja Stridh ha ingaggiato Solveig, e insieme indagano sui loschi affari dietro alle quinte dei ristoranti più rispettabili di Stoccolma. Ma tutto cambierà in un attimo. Vanja viene uccisa durante l’annuale Gold Chef Gala e Solveig dovrà intraprendere una pericolosa ricerca della verità.
Have you ever read italian thrillers?
Yes. Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose is an evergreen.
Hai mai letto thriller italiani?
Si. Il romanzo “Il nome della Rosa” di Umberto Eco è un evergreen.
Who are your favourite nordic authors? Or Who are the nordic authors you have been guided by?
Rolf and Cilla Börjlind and their Springflood-series are just great. Their environments and style as well as their untypical investigators makes their stories stand out. And Stieg Larsson of course. Also I found Anna Karolinas books extremely well written. Her stories remind me a bit of those of Jens Lapidus, but with more intriguing female characters.
Quali sono i tuoi autori nordici preferiti? O ai quali ti sei ispirata?
Rolf e Cilla Börjlind e la loro serie Springflood sono fantastici. Le loro ambientazioni, lo stile e i loro investigatori atipici fanno grandi le loro storie. Ovviamente anche Stieg Larsson. Ho trovato i libri di Anna Karolinas altrettanto scritti bene. Le sue storie mi ricordano un po’ quelle di Jens Lapidus, ma con personaggi femminili molto più intriganti.
